Fall is just around the corner! That means there will be a lot more volunteers signing up for events and going out to keep our waterways clean. Be sure to sign up for events early and to reserve supplies from us for Adopt-A-Stream or Volunteer Monitoring as early as possible. Volunteer and make it a September to remember!

This month, we want to highlight the mom and son duo, John and Mai N., for Storm Drain Marking! They have come out to volunteer at several VolunThursday and the 2nd Saturday events this summer. Recently, they marked the most drains during our August 2nd Saturday event! Thank you for going above and beyond, John and Mai!

Did you know World Monitoring Day is September 18^th? You can help us monitor the health of a stream near you! There are approximately 3,000 miles of streams in Mecklenburg County. We have an extensive surface water quality monitoring program, but we need your help monitoring this vast network of streams! The Streamside Assessment and Chemical Monitoring programs enable you to test streams in your neighborhood for pH, Turbidity, Dissolved Oxygen, and Temperature, while conducting a visual assessment for pollution indicators. WORLD CLEANUP DAY is the world's largest one-day civic action to engage more than 180 countries to tackle the global waste crisis. World Cleanup Day is not just about cleanups. It's a strong and passionate network of doers who share the vision of a waste-free world. They believe that together we can make the world a cleaner place. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation, and Keep Charlotte Beautiful work together with volunteers to help clean up litter in streams, parks, and streets throughout the county. Celebrate World Clean-Up Day by volunteering. Check out the opportunities to volunteer this month below! 

Many of us are out enjoying our lakes around the county, and it’s important to know that the waters are safe for contact. Orange water could indicate excess sediment, gray water could indicate sewage contamination, and green water could indicate a harmful algal bloom. If you come across any discolored water, please report it to 311. Always remember to wait 72 hours after a rain event to engage in water recreation in our coves. If you would like to be notified of any swim advisories in our area, text MECKNOSWIM to 888-777 to get them sent straight to your phone. We will also be posting updates all summer long on our social media pages (@StormWaterCM).

The Catawba Riversweep is an annual event where residents from all over the Catawba-Wateree River Basin come together to clean up their shared waterway. On October 4, 2025, thousands of neighbors will come together at dozens of sites from Lake James to Lake Wateree and everywhere in between. It will be a day of hard work, fun, fellowship, and action! Storm Water Services will be hosting the Latta Nature Preserve site this year on Mountain Island Lake, so we hope to see you there!
