Help Wildlife Prep for Fall and Winter

Martin,

Summer is coming to an end and fall is just around the corner. Fall is a busy time for wildlife — many species are actively collecting food for hibernation, or fueling up for a long journey south for the winter.

Learn more about the different strategies wildlife use to survive the winter and how you can help:

  • Hibernation: Some mammals, reptiles and amphibians hibernate or enter deep sleep to survive winter. For example, chipmunks gather acorns, other nuts and seeds which are rich in calories and nutrients and store well for a supply of winter food.
  • Over-wintering: Many birds like cardinals, chickadees, bluebirds and mockingbirds don’t fly south for the winter. By planting native berry producing shrubs or trees you will attract these birds and ensure they have food throughout the winter.
  • Migration: Some species head south to warmer temperatures and more abundant food for the winter. Migratory birds need fuel in the form of seeds, berries and insects so make sure you have plenty in your yard.

By providing food, water, cover, places for wildlife to raise their young, and practicing sustainable gardening you are eligible to have your yard recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. When you certify, you’ll join over 251,000 gardeners across America who provide safe places for wildlife to thrive.

Thank you for all you do for wildlife.
