Nationwide You Are Full Of It! BEWARE!

Posted in: Madison Park

I put the Smartwise Device on my vehicle after getting advertising offers from Nationwide for 2 years.   Now I mention the 2 years because the first year even though it showed up when I logged in as available I was told by Nationwide via phone call to me that it was not available in NC.

Then this year it showed back up again.   I was told this time by my agent in NC that it was available.  So I tried to sign up.  I could not do it online and actually received a call from the 1800 main offce that my insurance was "low as it was going and I could not have SmartRide."   My local office said well you can't have it under the policy number that you had for the last 20 plus years, but we can get you the device.

So it came in the mail and I installed it.    It measures night time driving, braking hard, and mileage.    I did my period and returned the device.   It stated I had earned 40% discount.

Well this morning I get my bill on line for Sept. and it is less than $100 off the prior 6 months.  I made no changes.

Now I don't know about you but I know 40% off  $412.00 the prior 6 months is not less than $100 bucks off the premium.

I am Thankful for the discount I recieved but don't tell me I earned 40% off and take less than 25% off the bill.

Clearly a Case of False Advertising from Nationwide!

Final Discount
Final stated discount is an approximation. Final discount does not apply to all coverage elements; actual savings vary by state, coverage selections, rating factors and policy changes. Final discount applies at the next policy renewal and is subject to change based upon actuarial support at subsequent renewals or with changes in drivers or vehicles on the policy.

How do you return your device?

This is what the program advertises.

Nationwide’s SmartRide program rewards safe driving

Driving safely is no easy feat. If you’re a driver committed to staying alert, avoiding distractions, and following the rules of the road, we’re going to reward you for it.

SmartRide, a usage-based insurance program, gives you personalized feedback to help you make even safer driving decisions. You’ll earn an instant 10% discount when you sign up. The safer you drive, the higher the discounts you could get – up to 40%.

Side note:

The other thing they measure which is somewhat crazy is idling time.    We don't control traffic lights.   I got tot where I turned off the engine at drive ups to avoid getting dings for idle time.

Here is a response today from my local agents office.

I don't have any additional information for you, unfortunately.
Another of our clients had the same issue. If I remember correctly the program says up to 40% discount. Since we don't issue the devices or calculate premiums you can call the phone they originally provided for assistance.

Thank you,
