This morning shortly after 7 am a fire broke out in materials in the holding area of the North Meck Full Service Center.
The fire apparently was caused by an improperly discarded Lithium Ion Battery that should not have been disposed into the trash. Actually, there were several Lithium Batteries that were found during the cleanup process.
No damage to any buildings or equipment occurred, but we did shut the facility down for several hours from 7 am until around 10:30.
We consciously store materials in bunkers in case such situations arise to minimize any damages. We frequently have these battery fire related issues at all of our centers, and it is a national issue with all solid waste centers.
Our program again asks that all Mecklenburg County residents and businesses be careful when discarding any RECHARGABLE battery, and to bring those to our Household Hazardous Waste Centers operated at each Disposal Facility.
