Staff Pick of the Month: Charlie!
Hi! I’m Charlie!
I arrived at HSC after being rescued from a puppy mill where I had spent my whole life…until now! I’m a social senior boy (8 years old), and I love meeting new people and other dogs.
I also LOVE food and will get the zoomies when it’s breakfast time.
I am a very special boy with some medical conditions. I will need an adopter that can help me maintain my best health through a close relationship with a veterinarian, as I will need frequent visits to my vet. This is of utmost importance because I have an enlarged heart, and dental disease and am currently being maintained on medications. I will need to remain on medication for the rest of my life.
I’ve spent some time in foster and I enjoyed spending quality time with my foster brothers and lounging around in the sunshine. Did I mention that I love food? I would make the best companion for someone that loves to hang out on the couch. Please consider giving me the love that I deserve.
To learn more about me, please fill out the adoption questionnaire under my profile at www.petango.com/HSC

Like all Charlotteans, HSC has struggled to keep up with the ever-changing information surrounding COVID-19. Despite the unknown, our love of animals and our dedication to their welfare has never been stronger. Our HSC team continues to work tirelessly to care for the animals at our facility and help them find their forever families. As an essential workforce organization as defined by Mecklenburg County, we are anxiously waiting the green light from health officials to return to normal operations. Until then, our top priority will remain focused on the caring for the animals we serve and the people who love them.
A New Way to Adopt — Putting Safety First
The Humane Society of Charlotte has rolled out a new adoption-by-appointment system in order to continue finding forever homes for our animals while keeping our adopters and staff safe. Potential adopters can complete an online application indicating their interest in a particular pet. Our staff is working hard to respond to applications in order of receipt within 48 hours to honor our first-come, first-served policy. Much of our adoption counseling takes place via phone to limit exposure once adopters arrive at the shelter. Our trained adoption counselors have an in-depth conversation about the pet’s behavior, medical and additional history.
Sheltering & Fostering
While our shelter is closed to the public, we are continuing to support our municipal transfer partners and are bringing animals to the Humane Society of Charlotte. By continuing this work, we keep the life-saving cycle going by creating space for our municipal shelter partners to prepare for the unknown days to come.
During this time of crisis our foster program has had to modify its programming to adhere to the social distancing guidelines. We are now offering virtual foster orientations to onboard new foster parents, and “Curbside Foster Appointments” to keep staff and foster parents safe while we continue working together to save lives.
HSC Spay/Neuter Clinic
The Humane Society of Charlotte's Spay/Neuter Clinic made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend all spay/neuter surgeries according to the advice provided by the CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association. We hope to continue with public spay/neuter surgeries and TNR surgeries in the weeks to come, but stand ready to provide assistance in the wake of an emergency situation.
The Humane Society of Charlotte Critter Care Wellness Clinic has been suspended until further notice to protect our staff and clientele. We have launched and are currently offering Essential Care services by appointment. To schedule, click HERE.
Pet Food Bank Deliveries
Hundreds of individual clients and dozens of community partners benefit from our Pet Food Bank, which supplies free pet food and supplies to people who are facing financial difficulties. In order to provide these supplies to our clients safely, our team has rolled out pet food bank deliveries to our existing clients. Our Community Outreach team delivered 3,800 pounds of pet food and made a total of 114 contactless deliveries during the month of March.
You can help keep our Pet Food Bank shelves stocked when you make an online donation today or purchase items from our Amazon Wish List. Your gift will provide for those who need it most. We are currently not accepting drop-off donations.
Thank you to all who continue to support the Humane Society of Charlotte!

Essential Care Services from HSC Clinic Services
|
|
|
|
The Humane Society of Charlotte Clinic Services team is now offering Essential Care Services to help community members during the coronavirus crisis. Because our normal Critter Care Wellness Clinic brings 50+ people together in close proximity, we felt it necessary to suspend these services.
In an effort to protect our community but still be able to provide essential animal care during the “Stay at Home” mandate, we are offering these appointments to keep your pets healthy.
What Are Examples of Essential Care?
· Rabies Vaccines
· Bordetella Vaccines
· Flea & Tick Preventative
· Heart worm Tests and Preventative
· Nail trims
For a list of the services offered during Essential Care, visit our Critter Care page for a list of services offered.

CARES Act Charitable Giving Updates
|
|
|
There is no better time to consider charitable giving than now!Charitable organizations, like the Humane Society of Charlotte, are facing significant hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognizing that individuals and businesses want to support charities in these times of need, lawmakers included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act modified certain limitations on the income tax charitable deduction to encourage donors to give in 2020!
The CARES Act includes the following incentives to encourage charitable giving:
- An opportunity for individual taxpayers claiming the standard deduction to deduct $300 of cash charitable contributions from adjusted gross income. Sometimes referred to as an “above-the-line” deduction.
- The existing cap is lifted on annual cash contributions for those who itemize, raising it from 60% of adjusted gross income to 100%.
- Similarly, the Act raises the 10% of income limit on deductions by corporations to 25% of income.
- While gifts to donor advised funds are excluded from these charitable giving provisions, donations to other funds are eligible, along with direct gifts to nonprofit agencies.

What Will Your Legacy Be?
|
|
|
Planned giving makes every dollar go farther. To maximize your charitable giving, as well as fulfill your own financial needs, you can fund the future of the Humane Society of Charlotte through your estate planning.
Three easy giving options include:
- Bequests
- Retirement plan assets
- Life insurance policies.
For more information on making a planned gift and becoming a member of our Legacy Society, please contact Libby Currier, Donor Engagement Manager.

Charlotte Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE) recognizes that pets sometimes require special, expert care – and that can happen suddenly! That’s why they are here.
CARE strives to exceed your expectations while treating every pet as if he or she was our own. For referrals, we work closely with your veterinarian and, as a team, diagnose the condition and plan a course of treatment with careful consideration for quality of life.
Even amidst the global pandemic, CARE is open and continues to provide care for emergency and speciality patients. They are here for you when you need them the most!

Don't Kit-nap the Kittens!
|
|
|
|
Our Trap-Neuter-Return program is on hiatus during the pandemic, but we know there are still outdoor cats breeding in our community.
Please keep in mind, just as it is healthier for you to stay at home during this time period, kittens should also be allowed to stay with their mom.
You can read more about not kit-napping kittens on our website. If you see new community cats that need TNR surgery during this time, please let us know! This change is temporary and we WILL return to our normal TNR operations when the stay at home order is lifted.
If you find kittens, learn more about what to do HERE.

We Need You Now, More Than Ever
|
|
|
As our families and our community respond to COVID-19, our staff and volunteers continue their tireless efforts to care for the animals who need our help.
These are unprecedented times, but with the ongoing support of friends like YOU, we will never stop showing animals the best that humans can be. Your generosity helps us keep going and helps us heal their wounds, inside and out, while keeping them safe, fed and loved until their forever family comes along. Together, we make our community and our world a better place for all.
Our greatest need in order to provide care to the animals during these very uncertain times is monetary donations. Thank you for all you do for the animals!
