Business Recycling in Mecklenburg County | WipeOutWaste.com
Welcome to the fourth issue of The Recycler! We want to start out by
acknowledging the continued success of The Recycler. This would not be possible without you, the reader. A couple of big
things have happened since our last issue, Mecklenburg County’s LUESA division has moved to a new location of Suttle
Avenue and we have been gearing up for the Great American Cleanup! It’s a full issue filled with great resources for
businesses just starting out, as well as ones who are already invested in waste reduction and recycling. We also have a
spectacular Above and Beyond spotlight this issue. As with everything, we want this to be sustainable, and that starts with
you! Send me an email (Aaron.Caudle@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov) letting me know what you think about The Recycler.
Tell us your solid waste and recycling challenges and accomplishments for a chance to be featured as our Above and
Beyond spotlight business.
The Move Mecklenburg County’s division of LUESA moved in late December and is now
located at 2145 Suttle Avenue. The facility houses Air Quality, Code Enforcement, Water and Land
Resources, Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), and Solid Waste and Support Services. LUESA, which
moved from the Hal Marshall Center in Uptown Charlotte, becomes the first county agency to relocate
as part of “Bringing Mecklenburg County to You”. This plan aims to provide quality county services in
locations that are convenient to customers.) Click HERE to find out more.

BANK OF AMERICA MY ENVIRONMENT
Plastic Bag Recycling Program

DID YOU KNOW Each year it is estimated that 500 billion - one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide - and less than
5% of those are recycled. Which means that most of them end up in a landfill where they can take up to 1,000 years to break
down, after which point they still remain toxic*. What’s more:
• 1 trillion plastic bags worldwide equates to one million plastic bags used per minute*.
• Plastic bags are the 2nd most common type of ocean refuse*.
In September of 2015, the Bank of America My Environment® employee program
launched a volunteer-led plastic bag recycling program. Even though it is best to use a
reusable bag, we still see a lot of plastic bags at work. So, the bank’s My Environment
volunteers created a program where members sign up to be the plastic bag recycler
on their floor and hang a canvas “bag-bag” in the break room, with instructions. Each
week, volunteers collect and count the bags, and then take the bags to a recycling
location in their local community, such as a grocery store recycle bin.
Here in Charlotte, 55 employees are signed up to be plastic bag recyclers and have
collected and recycled nearly 3,500 bags in just the first four months of the program.
At an average of 128 bags collected per volunteer, we can expect Charlotte Bank of
America offices to divert roughly 21,000 bags per year from landfills and waterways—
and that number should grow as more and more employees sign up for the program.
Over 180 employees participate in the program across the U.S., India and the United
Kingdom. Since the program began, over 15,000 plastic bags have been recycled—the
equivalent of total bags that 10 average American families throw away each year*.
ABOUT MY ENVIRONMENT In 2010, the Bank of America My
Environment employee program was created to help educate employees on how to act as environmental stewards at work,
at home and in the community. Today, more than 18,000 employee members in 32 countries participate in hundreds of
environmental educational and service events each year. Together, My Environment employee members have logged more
than 200,000 environmental volunteer hours in our communities since the program began.
ABOUT BANK OF AMERICA’S SUPPORT OF THE ENVIRONMENT Since 2007, Bank of
America has provided more than $49 billion to low-carbon and other environmental business activities. Last summer, it
increased its second environmental business commitment of $50 billion to $125 billion. This commitment is helping the bank to
address climate change and demands on natural resources through lending, investing, capital raising, advisory services and
developing financing solutions for clients around the world.

Business Recycling Spotlight
Business Recycling in Mecklenburg County | WipeOutWaste.com
“In our business, we can often add a commercial recycling
dumpster and train the employees to divert recoverable waste
away from the landfill with no impact to the company’s waste
management budget. The WOWBiz program has been a great
way to overcome the objection businesses sometimes have about
the cost of adding the inside collection bins necessary to start their
business recycling program. WOWBiz has supplied desk-side
collection and intermediate break room style bins made of recovered
corrugated cardboard to many of my clients. This is a great
encouragement to businesses and allows them a period of time to
“try on” the new behavior with no out of pocket cost.”

“The Wipe Out Waste Ambassador Program has provided me
with an avenue to meet and network with like minded individuals.
People who, from an environmental stance, are trying to not
just ‘do the right thing’ but are willing to go above and beyond
every day. The relationships I am building and the networking is
extremely valuable, but what I really appreciate as a business
in the B2B realm, is the ability to confidently connect people to
people I have met through the program and resources I have
access to that I wouldn’t otherwise.”

Business Recycling Law
In 2002, Mecklenburg County and local business leaders worked together to create the Source Separation Ordinance. This
law requires Mecklenburg County businesses to recycle corrugated cardboard and office paper, and to keep these materials
separate from nonrecyclable trash. To assist your business in meeting its obligations under the ordinance, we have developed
this quick-reference.
Does My Business Have To Comply?
Your business must comply with the Source Separation Ordinance if:
• It is located in Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, the towns of Cornelius, Davidson,
Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill or Pineville
• Your business is contracting for ≥16 cubic yards of garbage service per week
• Your business is generating more than 500 lbs/month of corrugated cardboard and/or office paper.
How to Comply
Keep corrugated cardboard and office paper separate from your business’ non-recyclable trash. For the purpose of recycling,
contract with a vendor to pick up your recyclables or self-haul these materials to one of our free and conveniently located
Commercial Drop-off Centers.
