Charlotte Mayor Daniel Clodfelter was joined today by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to announce the award of a $25 million TIGER Grant to the City of Charlotte for the Charlotte Gateway Station Project. The grant will be used to fund the design and construction of important track and safety infrastructure work in Uptown Charlotte, both laying the foundation for the future multi-modal project and improving future freight operations.

“The Charlotte Gateway Station is an integral part of the 2030 Transit Land-Use plan, a nexus of many years of inter-agency planning, coordination and partnership,” said Mayor of Charlotte and Metropolitan Transit Commission Chair Daniel Clodfelter. “This award from the U. S. Department of Transportation provides essential resources to continue to advance this transformational project.”

The Charlotte Gateway Station Project is a joint project sponsored by the City of Charlotte and NCDOT. This successful collaboration will produce a signature multi-modal facility bringing passenger rail into the city’s vibrant Center City connecting local rail, local and regional buses and inter-city buses.

Planning work will be completed next year and will include definition of the transportation elements of the multi-modal station. The matching funds for the TIGER grant will be discussed as part of the normal sequence of the upcoming budget process. The city is seeking private development partners to work jointly in the creation of this premier passenger station in a multi-modal urban project in this rapidly emerging area. CATS previously secured approximately $26 million in federal grants to acquire the site upon which the station will be constructed and to construct the bus component of the multi-modal facility.??‹
