Bonds Overview

$110.9M
streets
$15M housing
$20M neighborhoods
32 days until Election Day!

This November, there will be three referenda on the general election ballot that ask Charlotte voters for approval to issue bonds worth $145.9 million. The financing costs for these bonds have already been planned for in the city budget and will not result in additional property tax increases for Charlotte residents.

These funds will be used to upgrade and enhance streets and infrastructure, build affordable housing, and improve infrastructure in the city's older neighborhoods and emerging high-growth areas.

Please take a moment to read more about the referenda and the Vote Yes For City Bonds campaign.
Project Highlight: Cross Charlotte Multi-Use Trail

This expansive multi-use trail will connect Mecklenburg County's existing system of greenways to form one of the longest urban trailways in the Carolinas, spanning from York County to Cabarrus County. The 2014 street bond includes an advancement of $5 million that would allow the city to begin master planning for the 26-mile portion within city limits, as well as design and land acquisition for the two city-funded connections of the trail: Cordelia Park in NoDa and Brandywine Road to Tyvola Road. Funding for the trail's completion will be proposed in future bond referenda.

Once completed, this trail will not only provide space for recreational walkers, runners and cyclists, but also serve as a commuter path for walkers and cyclists traveling to and from work. The city estimates that approximately 98,000 jobs and 80,000 residents will be located within a half-mile of the trail.

FAQ of the Week

Q: What determines the size of the bond package?

A: City staff makes a recommendation for City Council's consideration as part of the annual budgeting process. This year, the amounts for the street, housing and neighborhood improvement bonds were set based on infrastructure needs identified in the city's Community Investment Plan (CIP).

AIA Charlotte and the Charlotte Regional REALTOR Association are our most recent endorsing organizations and we're thankful for their commitment to continuing to improve Charlotte.

Congratulations to a big bonds supporter, local bike shop Espada Bicycles in NoDa, for just being named "Best Bicycle Shop" in Charlotte by Creative Loafing.
