News from the City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services - September 2014

Solid Waste Services Announces Collection Service Updates

On August 31, 2014, the City of Charlotte (City) and Inland Service Corporation (Inland) mutually agreed that it would be in the best interest of both parties to conclude their three year Residential Recycling Collection Services Agreement. The City thanks Inland for its 11 years as a vendor providing services to its constituents.

On September 1, the Solid Waste Services department began providing recycling collection services to all residents according to their normal schedule. The City of Charlotte will deliver recycling services to residents until a new recycling contract is effective in 2015. Residents may notice Republic Services and Inland trucks on neighborhood streets as these vehicles are assisting in providing City services.  Garbage, bulky and yard waste collection services will be provided as normal.

Recycling Item Spotlight ... Cardboard

Cardboard image

Cardboard is an acceptable recyclable item for collection in the Recycle it! curbside collection program. Acceptable cardboard items range from cereal boxes to appliance boxes to the newly acceptable pizza boxes.

The best tip for recycling cardboard is to ensure that it fits into your green recycling rollout cart and your lid is able to close completely. Prior to placing into cart, cardboard should be cut (not folded) into pieces no larger than 3 feet x 3 feet.

Like all recyclables, cardboard recycling is important in diverting recyclable items from the landfills and the ability for it to be created into a new product. There are many items made from cardboard with many uses. Items created from cardboard include pizza boxes, shipping/packaging boxes and cartons.
