Participate in a Community Growth Workshop

Residents of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have the opportunity to help plan for future growth through two community growth workshops in October. The workshops are part of a series of community growth workshops sponsored by the CONNECT Our Future initiative, coordinated by Centralina Council of Governments and Catawba Regional Council of Governments. The workshops will be held:

Monday, October 14
Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House (218 Davidson-Concord Road)
The Davidson event is a two-hour workshop at three separate times: 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, October 24
Mahlon Adams Pavillion-Freedom Park (2435 Cumberland Avenue)
The Charlotte workshop will be conducted from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Participants will work with other area residents to demonstrate how the region, and specifically Mecklenburg County, might grow over the next 40 years, and map out the growth, focusing on where people will need to work, live, and play and how the quality of life can be protected as the county grows. The ideas discussed and maps developed will be combined with the input gathered across the region. From these shared ideas, four or five possible scenarios for the growth of the region will be created. These scenarios will reflect the different perspectives and desired outcomes shared across the region.

Registration to attend the community growth workshops is strongly recommended. To register and for more information on CONNECT Our Future, visit www.connectourfuture.org.

GOV Channel Presents: “John & Andy”

Death is never easy to accept, especially when it’s two young police officers killed in the line of duty. Watch “John & Andy”  to see why this tragedy still affects the community.

On the twentieth anniversary of their death, the GOV Channel re-aired the Emmy-nominated program “John & Andy” featuring rare news footage of John Burnette, 25, and Andy Nobles, 26. Hear from their parents, fellow police officers, then-Mayor Richard Vinroot, and residents who knew and loved them.

Burnette and Nobles were shot and killed October 5, 1993 as they chased a suspect toward the woods behind Boulevard Homes in southeast Charlotte. Jerome Alden Harden, was later convicted on two counts of first degree murder.

“John and Andy” is a production of the North Carolina Center for Educational Films, by Kathryn Frye, in association with the GOV Channel.
