Keep Charlotte Beautiful Receives $10,000 Grant, Enters New Partnership

Keep Charlotte Beautiful (KCB) recently received a $10,000 Waste Management/Keep America Beautiful Think Green grant, one of only 10 grants of its kind awarded to Keep America Beautiful’s nationwide affiliates.

The grant will assist the Commonwealth Park Neighborhood Association with its efforts to transform the former Charlotte Inn property in east Charlotte into a public gathering space for community members. Piedmont Middle School will use the grant funding for a variety of beautification projects, including showcasing the students’ nature themed mosaic artwork, installing decorative planters with ledges for seating, and planting flowers and trees. The Think Green grant funding will also support America Recycles Day, the annual recycling education, e-waste and document shredding event.

Additionally, in honor of Keep America Beautiful’s National Planting Day, Keep Charlotte Beautiful has partnered with TreesCharlotte to sponsor a tree planting event in north Charlotte. TreesCharlotte is a collaborative of agencies focused on achieving Charlotte City Council’s goal of having 50 percent of the city covered by tree canopy by 2050. In doing so, as many as 500,000 trees will need to be planted during the next 38 years.

The tree planting event will be held on Oct. 19 in the McIntyre community. Five hundred trees will be planted, including species that are native to the Charlotte area. Call 704.353.1235 to volunteer. For additional information about the partnership or Keep Charlotte Beautiful, contact Louise Bhavnani at lbhavnani@charlottenc.gov.
