Submit Your Nominations for the Neighborhood Leadership Awards

This October, Neighborhood & Business Services (N&BS) will honor residents, merchant associations and neighborhood associations at its Neighborhood Leadership Awards ceremony. N&BS is asking members of the community to nominate individuals, business and neighborhood groups who have taken a lead role in community improvement projects.

Hosted by the department’s Community Engagement Division, the Neighborhood Leadership Awards will celebrate those whose contributions and volunteerism merit recognition. These efforts include the support individuals and neighborhood groups provide to City of Charlotte staff to help plan, provide services and execute projects.

Any member of the community may submit a nomination by completing an online nomination form, emailing a completed form to nlawards@charlottenc.gov, or hand-delivering or mailing the completed form to N&BS. Nominations must be submitted or postmarked by Friday, September 20.

For additional information about award categories and eligibility requirements, please visit the Neighborhood Leadership Awards webpage

CONNECT Our Future Community Growth Workshops

On Wednesday, September 25, City and County residents will have the opportunity to provide input that may shape our region for the next 40 years. CONNECT Our Future will hold three, two-hour workshops where attendees will be able to collaborate with neighbors to map out growth for Mecklenburg County, and measure quality of life in our region.

The map you develop, along with maps from the other 13 counties in our region, will be combined with input previously gathered from the area. From these shared ideas, four to five possible scenarios will be created which reflect the different perspectives that are shared throughout the region. In 2014, residents will again be asked for input on their preferred alternative growth scenario.

Wednesday, September 25
Three identical sessions, each lasting 2 hours

  • Morning Session: 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
  • Afternoon Session: 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
  • Evening Session: 6:30 p.m. -8:30 p.m.

East Stonewall AME Zion Church (1729 Griers Grove Rd.)

Attending one of these workshops is a great way to meet and work with individuals from across the county who are interested in the future of our region.

Register to Volunteer for the 2013 Big Sweep

All residents are invited to volunteer for this year’s Big Sweep, which is a one-day cleanup of Charlotte-Mecklenburg creeks, streams and lakes. Litter in our local bodies of water is unsightly, can be deadly to wildlife and can contaminate our water supply. During last year’s event, individual volunteers, civic groups, school clubs and trade organizations participated to collect more than 10,000 pounds of trash from local waterways.

Saturday, September 28
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The Big Sweep will be staffed at six different locations. View the chart at the bottom of the Big Sweep webpage for directions, meeting place information and site difficulty.

At the staffed sites, Big Sweep participants will be provided with trash bags, gloves, snacks, water and instructions from a site coordinator. Volunteers are asked to wear a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and old clothing and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Children ages 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
