Safety Alert!
There was a break-on on Buckingham Drive near the intersection of the Cortlands, across the street from where the wall at Harris Teeter starts. This is the second time this home was broken into in the past six months, both times in broad daylight. The first time, the front door was kicked in. Yesterday, the back door was kicked in. We assume this homeowner took all necessary precautions and that this is an unfortunate coincidence. But it's worth reminding all of you to secure your home and take these measures to make your home is less attractive to potential thieves:
- Draw all your curtains and blinds while you are away. A thief is less likely to steal what he/she can't see.
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Get a home security system and post the sign prominently.
- Consider reinforcing your doors with Armor Latch (recommended by CMPD) or another product. They're available online or at home improvement stores for less than $100.
While you're gone on vacation
- Don't advertise the fact that you're going on vacation (via Facebook, Twitter or other social media)
- Keep your outside lights on at all times
- Get a neighbor to pick up your mail (they can check on your house while they're there)
- Make arrangements to have your grass cut while you're gone
- Ask a neighbor to park a car in your driveway
There are lots more great safety great tips here.
Never hesitate to call! The officers in our area have stressed to us again and again that they would much rather investigate and find out it was "nothing" than not be notified when it turns out to be "something."
Let's work together to keep our neighborhood safe!
