Mecklenburg Friends of Agriculture Meeting
July 9, 2013
12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
Urban Homesteading
Harmony Gardens

Join us for a discussion that will impact everyone on urban homesteading! Come learn about Harmony Gardens, their sustainability efforts and how they transformed 1/2 an acre of and into a wildlife habitat and urban homestead project.

Guest Speaker: Dhijana Scott-Harmony

Harmony Gardens is a 1/2 acre wildlife habitat and urban homestead demonstration project of sustainability in the city. Instead of growing a lawn, Borys and dhijana are creating a balanced ecosystem with 3 ponds with waterfalls, an orchard, a chicken house and yard, a duck house, multiple terraces and raised bed boxes, 5 small green houses and a hoop house, a water catchment system and so much more. Most of this was built reusing, recycling and repurposing found and donated materials. They produce plenty of delicious and unusual fruits, vegetables, eggs and herbs (using organic methods) year around for themselves and for the Atherton Market in South End. Tours are available by appointment for those who want to learn more. They charge a small fee for the tours.
