June 19, 2013Final Day to Register for the 2013 Neighborhood Board RetreatOn Saturday, July 20, the Community Engagement Division of Neighborhood & Business Services (N&BS) will host the 2013 Neighborhood Board Retreat, which helps neighborhood and business association leaders assess the current state of their communities, identify solutions and plan actions to improve quality of life in the neighborhoods where they live, work and play. To attend, organizations must have five individuals attend the event, and first time Board Retreat participants will receive priority participation. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. 2013 Neighborhood Board Retreat To attend the Board retreat, submit your application by Wednesday, June 19. Animal Care & Control June EventsThroughout the month of June, Animal Care & Control (AC&C) will hold several events and pet adoption specials to kick off the pet lover’s summer. Take Your Dog to Work Day Happy Hour Celebration On Friday, June 21, AC&C, along with the Zoom Room, will host a happy hour event as a part of the “National Take Your Dog to Work Day” celebration. This annual celebration is held to increase adoption awareness and strengthen the bond between human and canine. Friday, June 21 An Un-BULLY-vable Deal Are you looking or an intelligent, affectionate, funny and loyal addition to your family? If so, AC&C and the Humane Society of Charlotte have the deal for you. From June 22-23, bully breeds will be available for adoption for $10. City of Charlotte Holiday ScheduleCity of Charlotte offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4. Solid Waste Services will provide Curb It! collection services - garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulky waste - according the normal collection schedule on Thursday, July 4. National Night OutOn Tuesday, August 6, cities across the nation will participate in “America’s Night Out against Crime”, which is an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and strengthen neighborhood camaraderie. Neighborhood & Business Services (N&BS) wants to remind community participants that the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) requires neighborhoods to submit petitions for street closing permits, four weeks prior to the event. Restaurants, Nightclubs, Bars & LoungesThe Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Department staff will host several meetings to address the current regulations of Restaurants, Nightclubs, Bars & Lounges to review the required distance separation from residential districts and residential uses. Public input is a vital part of determining whether a use is a restaurant or nightclub and whether distance separations are appropriate. The Planning Department is seeking volunteers to serve on a citizens advisory group to provide valuable information that will be used to assist in crafting a text amendment to clarify these uses. The citizens advisory group will be comprised of residents, neighborhood leaders, business owners, attorneys and other interested parties. Planning staff will also be available through September to attend meetings for neighborhood & business organizations, and businesses to present information on recommended changes to the zoning ordinance. If you are interested in having Planning staff attend your neighborhood or business meeting to present the recommendations, please contact: Barry Mosley or Sonda Kennedy For more information, visit the Planning Department webpage. 2013 Recycle & Win ProgramThe City of Charlotte has partnered with Coca-Cola, Harris Teeter and Mecklenburg County to promote residential recycling through the Recycle & Win program which began on Monday, June 17. The six-month campaign will offer residents an opportunity to win a $50 Harris Teeter gift card for proper recycling. Residents will soon receive program details in the mail along with a “YES!” sticker that depicts what can and cannot be recycled, and the “Give It Back” sticker which residents can place on their recycling container to opt in to the program. Additional mailers and stickers will be available at all Harris Teeter locations throughout Mecklenburg County.
