Food Safety Update

New USDA Food Safety Resources for Consumer
By Kristin Davis, Extension Agent
Our food system is ever-changing. From an increase in local food production to growing interest in the ingredients of processed food, it is easy for consumers to get lost in the sea of information. Reports indicate that consumers were notified of 2,623 recalls in 2012,or 6.5 recalls daily.
In efforts to address the growing demand and need for food safety information, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture recently launched a new toll free line to assist NC residents in receiving information about food safety concerns. In addition, the department also offers a email option and comprehensive website for consumers. Save the following resources for future reference for your family.

Top 10 Nutrition Trends for 2013
Source: Dairy Council of California
It's an age old question, "Is it a trend or a fad." Trend and fad are often used interchangeably; however , there is a a distinct difference between the two words. "Fads" are short-lived, but "trends" have staying power. According to the Dairy Council of California, interest in proper nutrition and food policy are currently trending. In fact, with consideration to recent interest in local food, the Council indicate that "farmers' markets are popular, increasing in number by 17 percent in the past year as consumers trust their local farmers and yearn to feel closer to the foods that nourish them and their families. Putting a "face to the farmer" helps consumers draw the connection between the agricultural production of their food and the resulting meal on their plate." Now, that's good news!
