The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department plans a memorial playground at Park Road Park in memory of children and teachers killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Conn.
Existing equipment at Park Road Park will be replaced by new equipment.
Want to help?
• Hats Off to Parks will be 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. May 10 at Freedom Park, 1900 East Blvd., Charlotte. Tickets are $50. Buy a ticket or make a donation online at www.partnersforparks.org. • Also visit http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/county/ParkandRec/Pages/default.aspx. If you cannot attend but want to help the playground effort, financial donations, in-kind donations of materials and volunteer labor also will be needed. A playground planned for Park Road Park in the SouthPark area will be built later this year in memory of children and teachers killed in the December shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Proceeds from the third annual Hats Off to Parks luncheon, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. May 10 at Freedom Park in Charlotte, will go toward the playground.
In previous years, the event helped fund a playground in Lincoln Heights and improvements to Clarks Creek Nature Preserve.
