Sidewalk Safety

The City of Charlotte asks all residents to remember to keep all sidewalks safe and clear of obstructions such as yard waste, garbage and recycling carts, parked vehicles and other items that may impede their use.

While sidewalks obstructions may seem like a minor nuisance, they can pose a major danger for pedestrians, cyclists, runners and the disabled.

For guidance on what you can do to keep our sidewalks clear as well as for more on pedestrian safety tips visit the following areas:

Report obstructions to 311

I just walked my dogs and noted several cans on Tyvola blocking the street this am.  10 minutes later I took my 3rd dog on a lap.  All the cans were off the walk.   City I assume Waste Management had come out in a white truck with yellow flashing light and had someone move the cans.

Don't put anything on the sidewalks but your feet.

City is spending thousands on a campaign to educate citizens of Charlotte to not block the sidewalks.

Links in above post have info on how to prepare and place for pickup.

How To Prepare Garbage For Collection:

  • Place the garbage cart at the curb by 6:30 am on your scheduled collection day.
  • Bag all garbage before placing it in the garbage rollout cart. Do not overfill carts or place garbage items outside of the cart. Items outside the rollout cart will not be collected.
  • Please place the cart within 2 feet of the curb and with the handle facing toward your property. Do not block the sidewalk.
  • Please allow 3 feet of space between collection items and other obstacles such as mailboxes, phone poles and vehicles.
  • Place the cart at the curb no sooner than than the day before collection. The cart must be removed from the curb by midnight on the day of collection. A minimum $50 citation may be issued if you place the cart at the curb sooner than the day before collection or leave it at the curb past midnight on your collection day.
