The Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee is partnering with United Way of Central Carolinas’ Volunteer Center and other organizations to host a Community Day of Service on Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
The Charlotte in 2012 Day of Service will bring volunteers together to serve their city and to get ready for the 2012 Democratic National Convention. It will be a fun filled day with multiple volunteer opportunities around Charlotte. Some of the volunteer projects include:
- Working with the Rosedale Humana/KaBOOM! Playground build where a playground will be built entirely in one day;
- Building the new ‘Sense and Science’ Garden at First Ward Elementary School;
- Sorting donated food at Second Harvest Food Bank;
- Assisting with product placement and donations at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore;
- Breaking down and sorting metal components at the Habitat Metal Recycling Center;
- Assisting in the preparation and serving of lunch at Hope Haven;
- Building a community garden with Friendship Gardens;
- Beautifying the grounds at the YWCA Park Road Campus; and
- Cleaning up the Colonial Francis Beatty Park.
The Day of Service will showcase Charlotte’s culture of volunteerism and will highlight partnerships between the Charlotte in 2012 Host Committee and service organizations throughout the city. The event is part of Mayor Anthony Foxx’s convention legacy programs. By leaving a legacy, the 2012 Democratic National Convention has the potential to be more than a single event in time; instead, it has become a galvanizing moment for citizens to pull together and work to provide a strong future for the community.
This event is open to everyone in the Charlotte community that would like to participate, so please feel free to pass this information to any of your friends or family that would be interested in participating in any of these projects, including any young Charlotteans who wish to be involved in youth volunteering.
