Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation invites parents with children interested in playing soccer, ages 4-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12; or flag football, ages 4-6 and 7-8 to register for the upcoming fall coed recreation season. Registration fee is $65, which includes league play and uniform. The deadline for individual players to register is Tuesday, July 31. League play runs September to October with practices beginning in August. Game sites for Flag Football will include E.B Moore Park, Sugaw Creek Park and Elon Park while soccer game sites will be Elon Park and Harrisburg Road Park. Teams interested in registering must do so through Revolution Park Sports Academy 704- 432-4963 by Saturday, July 21. Team registration fee is $400. Groups that register as a Team must provide their own uniforms and secure their own practice sites. This summer, Charlotte-Mecklenburg will host the 2012 Disc Golf World Championships at various parks throughout the region. More than 1,000 professional and amateur players from around the world will compete for the title of World Champion on 11 courses including; Idlewild, Hornet’s Nest, Kilborne, Renaissance, Nevin, Eastway, Sugaw, Elon, Winget, R.L. Smith and Reedy Creek. The championships for each division will be held on Saturday, July 21 at Hornet’s Nest Park. Park and Recreation will offer free swim lessons for youth this summer at both Cordelia and Double Oaks outdoor pools. Registration will be accepted each Wednesday, starting at noon, for the following week only and must be completed in-person at the pool of your choice. The outdoor pools will also offer daily programs throughout the summer, so contact each pool to for a complete schedule. DISCOVER LATTA PLANTATION NATURE PRESERVE ON A SEGWAY! These two-wheeled personal transporters are a fun way to get out and see the wildlife, natural areas, and trails of Latta Plantation Nature Preserve, 5226 Sample Road in Huntersville. Highlights include Shady Trail, Buzzard Rock Trail, Laura's Trail and gorgeous views of Mt. Island Lake. Tours are offered the first and third weekends of each month (9 a.m. - noon and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.) through October. DONATE TO YOUTH OUTDOOR PROGRAMS Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, Park and Recreation is bringing the natural world into the classroom by providing hands-on environmental education to students in four Title 1 schools. This project will impact roughly 400 students across Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and provide a total of 4,500 interaction hours of HAND’S ON, OUTDOOR, environmental science curriculum.
