White Oak / Murrayhill All Stop News

Posted in: Madison Park

A mailing along with a post card enclosed went out today to select property owners on the Murrayhill / White Oak all Stop Proposal.

CDOT has confirmed the intersection qualifies for Traffic Calming due to the number of vehicles, and the documented speeding that has been verified.

Per CDOT rules the mailings go only to specific addresses of property owners that CDOT provides us in the impact zone.   There might be cases where your next door neighbor was considered in the impact zone and your home was not.  Also if your a rental the mailings based on taxed records went to the property owner.

We have uploaded the letter sent on our web site under pages.

The post card is a non required step that we did to allow those receiving the mailing to comment on the project.  Those in the impact zone can also send an e-mail to Madisonparkhoa@hotmail.com   Subject White Oak / Murrayhill All Stop.   We used the post card in 2009 on the Wedgewood / Murrayhill All Stop and that worked out nicely to record feedback.

We have been having complaints on the newly designed intersection, and some of our residents along Murrayhill and White Oak have complained about speeding for the last few years in that area.

Hopefully this proposed All Stop will help with the problems if we move forward with the install.

Not only should this conversion help with slowing traffic it will do a couple of additional things.

1.  It will give a good place for folks to cross over and get on the sidewalk out walking.

2.  It will keep the new design intersection open for residents.  Some complaints have been about vehicles at the corners making it hard to turn or see around.    You cannot park on the street within 20 feet of a stop sign.

Watch for updates on this project, and the outcomes of this mailings in our future minutes.

Refer to our 2012 minutes online for discussions on this intersection at past HOA meetings.

Making this intersection an all-way stop is just a further inconvenience for those of us who live in the area.  Driving down Murrayhill is slow enough with all of the huge speed humps that are uncomfortable to drive over at 10mph, let alone attempting to drive the speed limit.  If there are vehicles that are cutting through that are still going over the limit, at some point it needs to be addressed with speeding tickets rather than more impediments on the street.

From the new design, drivers have to make a 90 degree left/right turn to stay on Murrayhill.  This in itself is an inconvenience for no other reason than it makes giving directions that much more confusing.  Because of the new design of that intersection and the curve directly leading into it, a car needs to swing wide on Murrayhill to even make the turn onto Murrayhill, especially if a vehicle is at the stop sign already in place on Murrayhill (heading east) waiting to turn left to remain on Murrayhill.  If the car driving west has to stop before making the right turn onto Murrayhill, that car will either be blocking traffic because it is wide enough in the street to make the turn, or it will be close enough to the curb that it will not be able to make the turn if vehicles are approaching from the opposite direction on Murrayhill.

The point in the letter indicating that "additional signs will be required in advance of and at the subject intersection" is not exactly beautifying the neighborhood, either.

Some good news!  Based on feedback in the above post, and some of the other residents about the confusion of the intersection I have a little good news to report.

I personally always thought the street even the old design was confusing the way White Oak or Murrayhill just became another street.   I had not heard it was confusing from others until we started the all stop process.  I had others make very similar comments.  Based on those comments I took the concern to CDOT this am.

I just heard back that they agree and will come up with better signage to help make it clear to drivers visiting residents which streets they are on and that Murrayhill continues at this intesection.

I personally also agree with your comment about CMPD needs to write some tickets.  However based on 10 years of hearing the speeding issue on our streets we all know that is really not going to happen.   Most of the feedback so far, especially from our residents on Murrayhill, has mentioned the speeding is a problem for them.   I do know that even at all stops CMPD finds it is our neighbors that roll through them not stopping more than cut through traffic.   There has been several recent complaints of this happening at Wedgewood/Murrayhill.

There was a news story last week about the city going to install speed humps on 15 streets at residents request in Charlotte.  (none in Madison Park).  That story also mentioned that CDOT has a list waiting for humps.

I personally had rather go a little slow or stop a few times if it makes life better for our neighbors in that immediate area dealing with a speeding issue.

I also know the Fire Department hates speed humps as they say it damages their trucks.  With stop signs you don't have that issue.

Af for sign clutter you are probably correct in the post above.   But I am thinking about signs of a different type.   I am sure some of our residents will think it is a perfect place to tape a lost pet sign or yard sale.  For those that  don't know those type post in the right a way can lead to a $100 fine for each of the first 5,  $500 for the next 5, and $1000 for each one on top put up on top of that in the right a way.   You can always use this discussion post to advertise your yard sales and lost pets.  Just request a user name and we will grant you one.  This site averages 5000 plus hits every month.   If you have a multi neighbor yard sale e-mail us and we will add it to our calendar.  Send your request to Madisonparkhoa@hotmail.com    Include date, address and times.

Marty:

I talked with Terry. There are stop aheads up now either side of Murrayhill on Wedgewood. We will look at adding some speed limit signs in on Wedgewood where they might be missing.

Additionally, we will explore solutions to clarify the White Oak / Murrayhill intersection. We have a couple of options.

And we are going to clean up the Road Hump signing on Murrayhill. We don’t need signs at each unit anymore so we’ll appreciably reduce the clutter.
