The topic of Yard Sale's came up Monday Night at the Jan. HOA meeting. A resident had been visited apparently by zoning regarding too many yard sales and voiced she was disappointed someone had complained to the city on her. I thought first she meant this had happened in Dec. but she said it was a while back. I doubt that anyone is having Yard Sales now that it is winter but here is the info provided as FYI since there was some confusion on the rules at the meeting. Zoning was not present at Monday's meeting Code Enforcement was and they don't handle these cases. CMPD was still on hand and they don't normally get involved in these either. They are handled by zoning enforcement inspectors/ officers. Also you might want to keep in mind if you put up signs for your yard sale these should not be in the right a ways and not on telephone poles. This is not Madison Park Rules but city of Charlotte Rules. You can be fined $100 for the first 5 signs up, $500 for the next five up, and $1000 for each additional. Sign ordinance forbids putting up any signs in the right a way or within 11 feet of the curb and never on Telephone poles.
You can have 4 Yard Sales legally per year with a permit. The year period starts 7/1 and runs until 6/30 (that I did not know until I looked it up Monday night).

RESIDENTIAL ATTIC/YARD/GARAGE SALE PERMIT
A permit is required inside the City Limits of Charlotte when having a yard sale, attic sale, garage sale, or similar type of sale. The fee for this permit is $5.00 per day, payable by cash or money order only. The permit is valid only for the day or days issued and are not transferable (no rain dates).
Only four (4) sales are permitted at any given name/address during one year. These type sales can be no longer than two (2) consecutive days.

However, should extenuating circumstances exist which prevents you from visiting one of our offices, you may mail the necessary information along with a money order in the amount of $5.00 to purchase this permit. Please, do not mail cash. The required information is:
(1) The name and telephone number of the person
having the sale.
(2) The residential address of the sale.
(3) The date the sale is scheduled to take place.
(4) Money Order in the amount of $5.00.
Please include a stamped, self-addressed envelope to ensure a prompt response. This information, along with a money order in the amount of $5.00, should be mailed in advance of this sale to: Business Tax Collections Office, P.O. Box 32728, Charlotte, NC, 28232.
Please allow enough time for our office to process your request and for you to receive the permit from our office prior to the sale date. Please remember this permit must be kept at the site of the sale and available for inspection at all times during the sale.

This list should be faxed in advance of payment to the Business Tax Collections Office at 704-336-7602. Upon receipt of this list, our office will begin the process of creating these permits.
