Hi,
My name is Katrinna Witzel (I live in Montclaire) and my mother, Barbara lives on Montford. I wanted to let you know what happened to her last week, so that you can possibly warn your neighbors. A company, was doing some tree work at her house and broke one of the power lines coming from the main pole to the main circuit breaker. Although they knew they broke the line, they left the job with my 2 small children and senior citizen mother in the house. About an hour later, flames started in the circuit box and the furnace, appliances, etc were blown. Luckily, nobody was hurt and only about $1500 in damage was done. Although the company claims on their business cards, invoices, etc that they have insurance, they refused to provide my mother, my husband or me with the information. They abandoned the job on Friday and won't return calls.
I'm trying to get the word out to everyone to verify insurance, etc with a company before allowing them to begin work. There are many companies soliciting door-to-door who claim to be licensed and insured. As in my mother's case, you don't find out it's not true until it's too late.

Katrinna makes a great point. Don't just take a companies word. Request a copy of the document up front. If they don't provide it ...look elsewhere.
A few years ago I had a friend drop my line cutting a limb. That limb started a fire in the same area of my house. I also knocked out power to about a dozen houses behind me for 2 or 3 hours. Duke power rewarded with me by billing me for lost income of those house and charged me to put my line back up. (Duke will drop your line if you are ever having work done if you call ahead for free)...just a tip!
Fortunately my insurance took care of the problem less my deductible.
Anyway play it smart and check these people out the best you can.
