ZEUS’S STORY
Zeus is a 6-7 year old Doberman who spent the first 5 years of his life chained to a tree, without warmth, love or affection. His spirit was broken and you could see he was just waiting for death to release him from this bleak existence. Zeus’s life changed when he was rescued and came to Carolina P.A.W.S. He finally had a loving foster home, a warm bed, toys which he hoarded in his crate, and a teddy bear that he carried everywhere with him. Best of all…..he was loved! After almost one year of socialization and rehabilitation Zeus’s prayers were answered and Zeus was placed with a permanent family where he could spend the rest of his days, happy and healthy.

After almost one year of socialization and rehabilitation Zeus’s prayers were answered and Zeus was placed with a permanent family where he could spend the rest of his days, happy and healthy.
This past week Zeus was diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome. Zeus’s life is shattered because his adopted family cannot care for him and cannot afford the $7000 needed for surgery. Wobblers Syndrome is caused by a narrowing or malformation of the spinal cervical (neck) vertebrae. This causes pressure on the spinal cord by the lower cervical (neck) vertebrae. Wobblers causes severe pain, inability to walk and, if left untreated, irreversible nerve damage and permanent paralysis. These will be fatal symptoms for 90 pound Zeus.
Zeus is now back in his original foster home being kept comfortable, immobilized and on medication for his pain. The prednisone he takes every day has symptoms of its own and can weaken his immune system. Zeus is too big to be carried outside when he becomes totally incapacitated and can no longer walk on his own. His original foster family has committed to give Zeus his forever home regardless of the outcome after surgery.
Time is of essence: The only way to save Zeus’s life is with immediate surgery that must be performed by a veterinary neurologic specialist. He will need an MRI before surgery ($1,000) spine stabilization surgery ($5,000) and extensive rehab after surgery (hydro tank therapy $500-$1,000). The sooner this surgery is done the less likely Zeus will suffer from permanent nerve damage.
It will be long road to recovery for Zeus but he needs to be happy, healthy and pain free. He is owed that after the life he has endured at the hands of uncaring people. On behalf of Zeus we are asking for a cup of coffee, Lunch or Dinner…. Can you skip your Starbuck’s or a meal and donate $5.00, $10.00, or $20.00 to help Zeus?
