The Westover Division Response Area 3 continues to maintain significant gains in crime reduction for the year. We are currently at a 44% reduction in violent crime compared to 2009, a 20% reduction in property crime compared to 2009, and an overall 24% reduction in Part 1 crime compared to 2009. July brought a couple more larceny from auto cases than in recent months, but we made some fantastic arrests as well which are highlighted in the following pages. Officers have been working diligently to hold on to the gains we have made during these active summer months. I look forward to getting to know more of you as we partner together to fight crime in our neighborhoods. Larceny from auto if one of the more prevalent crimes we encounter and also one of the hardest to solve or catch in progress. Very rarely is any workable evidence left at the scene, and the thieves are typically in and out of a vehicle so fast officers seldom catch them in the act. Recently our officers have made some outstanding Larceny from Auto cases. CMPD Westover Division: Response Area 3 Newsletter On July 13, 2010, Officer Chris Urrutia (left) was partnered with Officer Will Henson (pictured below) and the two officers were patrolling the South Blvd corridor. Officer Urrutia observed a juvenile known to have been involved in criminal activity in the past. Officer Henson noticed the juvenile was carrying something. As the officers turned the patrol car around Officer Henson maintained eye contact and observed the juvenile throw the item into some bushes. Officers engaged the juvenile in conversation and questioned him about the item. Officers also located alcohol on the juvenile and placed him under arrest. Upon further investigation the two officers were able to locate the tossed item in some bushes which turned out to be a laptop computer. Officer then traced the property back to a vehicle that had just been broken into at the Archdale Light Rail parking lot. Both offices are to be commended for their alertness and follow through on this investigation. On July 28, 2010, just after midnight, Officer Henson (left) was patrolling the Elmsley Grove apartments when he observed a suspicious vehicle stopped alongside two parked vehicles. Officer Henson approached and observed two individuals seated inside the vehicle, and a third individual walking out from in between the two parked vehicles. Officer Henson detained the individuals and began inquiring as to what they were doing at such a late hour. Officer Henson then located a fourth individual crouched down by the front of the parked vehicles. Upon closer inspection of the parked vehicles Officer Henson noticed both vehicles had their glove compartments open and the contents strewn about the vehicle. Officer Henson was able to follow up with the vehicle owners and establish that the vehicles had been illegally entered. All four suspects were charged with breaking and entering into these two vehicles and they are currently being investigated as possible suspects in other near-by vehicle break-in cases. This is fantastic pro-active police work by Officer Henson. CMPD Westover Division: Response Area 3 Newsletter On July 18, 2010, Officer Molles responded to a commercial burglary call in the 1100 block of Tyvola Rd. While responding to the burglary call dispatch was broadcasting B.O.L.O. information for an additional “suspicious person” call for service in the same area along with a physical description of the individual. Officer Molles observed an individual matching the description carrying a large duffle bag walking from the area. Officer Molles attempted to stop the suspect and the suspect dropped the duffle bag and ran. Officer Molles chased the suspect on foot and caught him. Officer Molles located burglary tools on the suspect’s person and recovered stolen property in the duffle bag belonging to the business on Tyvola Rd. Officer Molles’ quick response to the scene, his observations, and foot pursuit skills resulted in a great arrest. On July 21, 2010, a vehicle was broken into on Ingleside Dr. The reporting officer called for a C.S.O. Officer and Officer Kiefer (left) responded. C.S.O. officers are designated crime scene officers who have received additional training in the evaluation and collection of physical evidence. Officer Kiefer was able to utilize her skills and training and successfully lift quality finger prints from the victim’s vehicle along with traces of arm hair. The finger prints were submitted to the crime laboratory and resulted in a positive match on a suspect in the national fingerprint database. The suspect in this case was charged and arrested. A great job was done by Officer Kiefer. Madison Park’s National Night Out Pictured below are some of the highlights of this year’s National Night Out activities in the Madison Park neighborhood on August 3, 2010. The event was a huge success thanks to the Madison Park Home Owner’s Association, H.O.A. President Marty Doss, and all the sponsors and volunteers that contributed. The Madison Park neighborhood and C.M.P.D. thank the local Target stores for their generous support of National Night Out.
