A Call for Guv'na Candidates and Community Projects

Mar 13, 2001

Do you want to make a difference in your community and have FUN, too? Do you enjoy getting to know people and making new friends? Do you like friendly competition and positive community exposure?
If you answered an enthusiastic "yes" to these questions, you should consider running for Guv'na of Lutz this year. The primary qualification requirements are that you're a Lutz resident or a Lutz businessowner, and that you have a willingness to raise votes (money). (Contact Sharon A. Espinola with questions and for more information or an application at 948-0830 or res04pn8@gte.net.)
Last year, with some hard work over a short period of time and a lot of fun along the way, our 2000-2001 Guv'na candidates raised more than $11,000, which helped many children, supported fire protection and maintained the character of our precious community. Vince Arcuri, our reigning Guv'na for 2000-2001, Larry Solomonson, William Nehls and Connie Bowen, along with their supporters, single-handedly made a difference in countless lives in Lutz as Guv'na candidates.
Our 2000-2001 candidates held a broad range of fundraising events, including a belly dance show, a carnival, a car wash, an after church brunch, a yard sale, a family picnic, a luncheon, a golf tournament, an auction and raffles. Corporate donations was solicited and secured, too. The race and the activities generated more than two dozen articles in our local newspapers?—the Tampa Tribune, The Times, Lutz Community News, In the Loop and Carrollwood News. It wasn't unusual to open the newspaper last spring and summer and find that Lutz was prominently featured on the cover page of the local news sections.
As our search begins for Guv'na candidates, we're also in search of worthy community projects in need of funding. Last year the beneficiaries of the Guv'na's race were Joshua House, Lutz Nature Park, Maniscalco Elementary School Playground, Lutz Elementary School Playground, Boy Scout Troup 12, Nye Teen Park Teen Center, and the Lutz Train Depot.
If you know of, or you are involved in what you think is a Lutz community project that should be considered for funding, please send a letter detailing your project, and why it should be considered, in care of Sharon A. Espinola, Lutz Civic Association, P.O. Box 1, Lutz, FL 33548.
In the meantime, stay tuned for more Guv'na race news.
