In 1949, Dean Boggs and John Tillman, two leading citizens in this Community who shared a great interest in college football, conceived the idea to form the Jacksonville Quarterback Club. At an informal dinner, these two men formulated plans for organizing a Jacksonville Quarterback Club. Invitations were issued to 125 residents of the city, who were both prominent citizens and football fans, to attend an organizational meeting and to become charter members. The object of the club was strictly fellowship and for the enjoyment, encouragement, and promotion of football in Duval County.
Nine Monday night dinner meetings were planned during the football season followed by an annual Bowl Party.
The officers of the club would be designated on the football team organization aspect, with a Captain, Alternate Captain, Quarterback and eight other players, making up the “team", plus a Statistician, Trainer, and Cheerleader. These fourteen people would be elected by the membership and serve for one football season.
The first meetings were held at the beginning of the football season the fall of 1949 and the Club was an instant success. The original limit of 125 members has been raised several times and in some years there has been a waiting list of prospective members who wish to join. The current cap is 375 members. The club continues to thrive because of its enthusiastic membership sharing the club's common interest - the enjoyment and promotion of football.
For many years, I have been a member of the Jacksonville Quarterback Club, a club exclusively devoted to football. The Club was started shortly after World War II by a group of men who shared a love for the game. Over time, we have heard from famous football people about their same love for the game, and their experiences at every level therein. Y.A. Tittle, Woody Hayes, Larry Czonka, Bobby Bowden (only to mention a few), are men all familiar with our club.
Over the course of the football season, we meet on Monday evenings to hear great speakers like these, to socialize and dine with them, and to meet sports fans in our own community who share these same interests. The members share not only their enthusiasm for football, but also mutual interests in the local business community and their varied civic endeavors. I have truly enjoyed my years in the club and the many friendships I have gained and know you would also benefit similarly from membership with our group. I will call you soon to tell you more about the club, our schedule for this year our preseason party, and how to join.
