Isle of Palms

Mayor’s JAX PRIDE Committee

Feb 02, 2000

The Isle of Palms Association has brought the following issues to the attention of all homeowners many times in previous newsletters. Now, Mayor Delany?’s ?“JAX PRIDE?” committee reviewed both association and city zoning infractions that continue to occur. Many of the infractions noted by the committee can still be corrected before they issue any citations.
Our goal is to continue to be a neighborhood that is admired for many reasons, most of which are obvious to us. One of the main issues is the value of our homes both now and in the future. If we continue to ignore zoning ordinances and the Isle of Palms Covenants, our homes can depreciate in value as the years go on.

FEBRUARY HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS ?“ISLE OF PALMS BEAUTIFICATION MONTH?”. We should all look at our properties and make any changes that we can to improve the neighborhood as a whole,.
THE CITY ZONING BOARD WILL BE ISSUING CITATIONS (EITHER BY SPOT CHECKS OR PUBLIC CALL-INS) FOR THE FOLLOWING:
 Work vehicles must be in garage or driveway
 Parking cars on grass areas or front lawns or side of house
 Cars that are even partially parked on the sidewalk
 Parking cars directly across the street from a neighbor?’s driveway
 Blocking any driveways
 Boats, boat trailers, or any other trailers are NOT to be seen. They are to be stored, or in fenced backyard, or in garage
 Allowing dogs outside at any time without a leash
 Allowing dogs to ?“do their business?” on a neighbors property
 Trash can only be put out on Tuesday AFTER 5:00 P.M. We can NOT store it at the curb after it is picked on Wednesday. IT MUST THEN BE OUT OF SIGHT UNTIL THE FOLLOWING Tuesday after 5:00 P.M.
 Vehicles with expired tags in the front of the house
 Vehicles that are not operational for more than ten days
If you need help or advise on a zoning infraction, call 223-PALM.

The next section involves The Isle of Palms Covenants. Most residents have never seen a copy of the Covenants. They were created and agreed upon by the Isle of Palms Association, which is a planned community subject to these covenants, conditions, and restrictions. Beginning in March, the Beautification Committee will send out reminder notices. They will inform you of Covenant infractions. But don?’t forget, February is ?“Beautification?” month, so we all have plenty of time to make changes. Reference to these covenants can be found in your Title Insurance. Remember, if we all work together and see this as a positive step for our community, we will feel extremely proud of our neighborhood. The following items are reminders and suggestions from the Isle of Palms Covenants, the mayor?’s JAX PRIDE committee, and the IOP Beautification Committee:

Do NOT blow or sweep any grass, dirt, or debris into the curb area or street in front of your house
 Clean curbs, sidewalks, and street in front of your house as often as you are able (we wouldn?’t want to be responsible if a bike rider [child or adult], jogger or walker slips and falls as a result of debris you have pushed into the street)
 Do not have any debris (examples are: recycle bins, garbage cans, lawn mowers, etc.) in the front or side of your property. (Try to hide trash cans in some manner)
 Try to keep your garage doors closed. This can be difficult for all of us. But there have been afternoon break-ins in our area. Let?’s not make it easy for them. Closed garage doors look better, of course, but they also keep down potential crimes.
 Barking and/or howling dogs are not to disturb the quiet of the neighborhood
 Try to keep lawn and any yard waste in our back yards until at least the day before lawn pick-up (which is on Thursdays).
 No dumping of debris anywhere in the Isle of Palms
 When disposing of appliances, etc. call 260-1592 to find out when it can be picked up. Please do not let these items sit on the curb until you call this number. They will not pick ANYTHING up unless you call. It is also listed in the section ?“Handy Phone List?”
 Clean up any debris the trash collectors can not pick up as soon as possible
 Put away trash cans as soon as you are able; preferably by Wednesday night.

Some of our neighbors work very hard on their properties. We GREATLY appreciate the work they do. We drive or walk by and admire what they have accomplished. It helps give a ?“cozy or familiar?” feel to our neighborhood. However, we all don?’t have the time. BUT we can take a few minutes and look at our house from the street. What can we do to help beautify our neighborhood? Let?’s all take the first step in taking our community to a higher level. Let?’s blow or sweep our curbs and the street in front of our own houses! Let?’s edge the grass that is growing over our curbs and into the street! IF YOU LACK THE EQUIPMENT, OR YOU ARE PHYSICALLY UNABLE, WE CAN AND WILL HELP YOU. Just call 223-PALM or e-mail trbo1999@cs.com.

It costs nothing. It is up to us. No one wants to pay a fine to the city for the above mentioned zoning infractions. We all want our homes to increase in value. But we can only accomplish this if we work together. Don?’t forget, if you need help with any special clean up, call us at 223-PALM. Our e-mail address is trbo1999@cs.com.
Do you have any suggestions? Do you want to be involved with the Beautification Committee? The Beautification Committee will help enforce the Isle of Palms Covenants and city Zoning laws. Please contact us at 223-PALM or e-mail us at trbo1999@cs.com.

JAX PRIDE will be revisiting our neighborhood some time in April. However, the city zoning officers can drive by at any time. The Isle of Palms Association and each and every homeowner will truly appreciate the effort we will all put in to make this a beautiful neighborhood.
