Rupert Murdoch's jaw-dropping crack that America needs a "real black president" is a "disgusting" remark that shows how skewed against African Americans his Fox News Channel really is, says Van Jones, a former adviser to President Barack Obama.
"How can you have someone like Rupert Murdoch, with all his wealth and power, stoop so low to challenge somebody's ethnicity?" Jones, now a political analyst, said on CNN.
The conservative media mogul created a firestorm Wednesday night when he tweeted praise for GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson, saying he would be a "real black" president, as opposed, supposedly, to President Barack Obama. -
Murdoch wrote on his Twitter account:
-
Ben and Candy Carson terrific. What about a real black President who can properly address the racial divide? And much else.
He followed up with a reference to a New York magazine story that asks whether Obama did enough to as president for the black community.
Many see the remarks an implication that Obama, who was born of mixed race parents, isn't a real black president.
Jones, who advised Obama on the environment, said if Murdoch is so concerned about African Americans he "should tell the people at Fox News he does so, because you can't tell by watching."
Murdoch's comments, Jones said, were "juvenile crap" and "completely outrageous and disgusting."
He added that the elderly media baron's Fox News Channel has been "an enemy of African-American struggles since it started."
Angry commenters have taken to Twitter to rip Murdoch's racial remarks.
