Five Points Neighborhood Association

Five Points Year in Review

Oct 28, 2002

Five Points Neighborhood Association was reinvigorated in August 2001 by several active citizens in our community. Maureen Peacock was essential in getting the process started. We are grateful to her for her efforts and enthusiasm. Other active neighbors included Daniel Hall Bill Schaeffer, Glenn and Elizabeth Miller, Bill Sanderson and Diana DeVercelly, MaryLou Albrecht, Alicia Woods, Danny Tower, Kathy Heady, Susan Hofstader, and Dan Terrana. We couldn't have done it without their hard work!

The initial motivation for re-activating the association was the problem of prostitution on our streets. This issue does not affect our neighborhood alone; it also affects Historic Old Northeast, Crescent Lake, Crescent Hights, Euclid-St. Paul, Greater Woodlawn and Magnolia Heights. The problem had become so bad last year that local women outside working on their lawns were being propositioned by men cruising the streets!

One of the major sources of prostitution in Five Points was the EnTowne Motel, located at the corner of 4th Street and 31st Avenue North. After many months of pressure from neighborhood people working with our Community Police Officer, Ray Merritt, the EnTowne closed down! The property was sold to a development company which is planning to build a retail facility that will house a convenience store/sandwich shop and/or other possible businesses. Many neighbors were active in the Permitting process and went before the City Planning Commission to express their concerns. Congratulations to the neighborhood for this great sucess!

This past year, Five Points Neighborhood Association has had two successful Block Parties, the second of which was shared with the newly formed Allendale Terrace Neighborhood Association. Food, fun, children's activities, and even a demonstration by a Canine Unit were made available to our neighbors. Thank you to everyone that made those events possible!

Recently, Bill Sanderson donated three beautiful signs which will be used to let people know when meetings are held. The signs will be placed at busy intersections within the neighborhood so everyone can know of the meetings. Thank you, Bill, for your generous donation.

Has anyone noticed the shiny Five Points signs? On October 19th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, we will be having a Community Project to renovate the Five Points Neighborhood signs. The previous incarnation of the association had gotten a grant from the city to purchase the signs. It's the neighborhood's responsibility to maintain them. Vice President Danny Tower has already donated his time to polyurethane the sign faces, so all that will be left is sanding and painting the posts. If anyone would like to participate, please call Danny at 823-5974 or Robin Reed at 528-1020.

Thank you again to all the wonderful people who have helped our Association? Everyone's efforts have made Five Points an even better place tolive. This is what neighborhoods are truly about!
