Don't Fall Victim !

Hello Groups,

Although scamming the elderly seems to be a year round problem, this time of year, law enforcement jurisdictions usually experience an increase. TPD & HCSO have been receiving reports about the below scams; the methods vary, so please look out for your elderly neighbors/friends & family members. Some of these people are very clever, to add to that, the elderly are sometimes embarrassed and may not report it to authorities, or family members.


* Impersonating Official City/County Workers ; In this scam, scammers either alone or in the company of other "imposters" approach the elderly and claim they are present due to the increase of termites, or other "utility purpose" with the seniors home. Such as checking leaking pipes, etc. When the victim is distracted, another individual enters the home, and steals while the victim is being distracted.
* Roof Scams; In this case, "roofers" claim that work needs to be done to prevent further damage, etc, then they spray a liquid solution on roof. The price for this work is outrageous, and of inferior quality.
* Yard Work; Individuals will offer to do yard work, but they are deceptive of the price. In this scam, they usually "muscle" the victim into paying by check, then promise to return to do the work. However, they immediately cash the check, and never return.
* Pregnant Wife in Emergency: This is a common scam, not limited to pregnancy. But usually involves the urgent need of cash.

What to do ? Be on the lookout for persons suddenly appearing out of no-where to do work ! Advise
neighbors/friend & family to listen to their instincts....keep the doors locked & call the
Police if they are suspicious of anyone. When in doubt, let the Police check it out.
