Colonel David Martello, Commander of the Mt. Moriah Police Station (formerly known as the East Precint), will be speaking at the Colonial Acres Neighborhood Association meeting this Thursday evening, October 23rd at 7:00 at Colonial Baptist Church on the corner of Quince and Colonial. This will be our last meeting until January. Residents of Sea Isle Park and Audubon Park Neighborhood Associations (all concerned folks!) are also welcome to attend.

Many who post on this forum show they care about our neighborhood, making this a good virtual community...  Come meet your real life neighbors and hear what the Memphis Police ARE DOING to alleviate many of the crime issues discussed here.

Learn what you can do to make Colonial Acres a better and safer place to live by being more aware, by reporting criminal activities and suspicious persons by calling 545-COPS, by forming a Neighborhood Watch group, and by joining the email distribution list we use to keep each other advised of crime trends, etc.

October meeting

We had a good turnout Thursday night for the meeting.  Col. Dave Martello spoke most of the hour, advising how the MPD is focusing efforts on areas that are experiencing an increased number of burglaries and non-residential thefts.  By far, most crimes in Colonial Acres are "property" crimes and happen during daytime hours when most people are at work.  These ideas were discussed-

Crime Prevention

What we can do to help prevent crime-
Overall, make your property more secure to help discourage criminals, don't be an "easy target."

* Keep doors and windows locked.
* Install security doors, alarm systems, motion lights.
* Start a Neighborhood Watch group on your block by meeting with your neighbors and exchanging phone numbers and email addresses.  Call the Police and Citizens Alliance (PACA) at the Mt. Moriah Station 636-4199 to find out how to register your group with the MPD.
* Don't leave valuables visible in vehicles. "Stow It, Don't Show It."
* Watch out for each other, arrange to pick up each other's mail and newspapers when you're away so there's no obvious sign that no one's home.
* Notice vehicles and persons that "cruise" your area and report suspicious activities to the police at 545-COPS (545-2677).  Give a good description, the more detail the better, including vehicle model, color, license plate number if possible.
* THE POLICE WANT TO HEAR FROM US on these issues.  We citizens are the front line of defense against crime.
