The Association of Arizona Food Banks is on a mission to fuel Arizonans with vitamin C. Volunteers are needed to help harvest citrus for the hungry. Property owners willing to have their fruit picked and donated are also needed. "We can get 250 to 300 pounds of fruit from a tree, so for an investment of a couple of hours, the volunteers can provide the quality of nutrients for someone in need," said Ginny Hildebrand, executive director of the association. The association, which was established in 1984, consists of food banks that work together with programs such as this.

Kim Brooks, program manager for United Food Bank in Mesa, a member of the food bank association, said volunteers will be needed through the end of March. Citrus collected will go to partner agencies that help those in need. These include Boys & Girls Clubs, senior centers, church pantries and homeless programs.

For information on how to donate or volunteer, contact the United Food Bank at (480) 926-4897, Ext. 256.
