Buckfield Militia

Posted in: Buckfield Farms
Proposed Organizational Meeting:
A meeting of all citizens of Buckfield Farms in Charleston County, South Carolina with an interest in organizing and training a local militia unit. Under the U.S. Constitution, the Militia consists of all citizens able to carry arms in defense of the State, who may be called to duty by the President or the Governor of the State, together with such other citizens as may wish to participate.

The Constitution of South Carolina is more specific in that Art. 1 - Sec. 20 states ?“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. As, in time of peace, armies are dangerous to liberty, they shall not be maintained without the consent of the general assembly ...?” And Art. 13 - Sec. 1 states ?– ?“The militia of this state shall consist of all able bodied male citizens of the state between the ages of 18 and 45 years, except such persons as are now or may be exempted by the laws of the United States or this State, or who from religious scruples may be adverse to bearing arms, and shall be organized, officered, armed, equipped, and disciplined as the general assembly may by law direct.?”
Persons older than the 45 years may be enrolled as Members Emeritus in the Buckfield Armed Militia, with all rights and privileges of members of the militia of the State. Persons as young as 12 years may be enrolled in the Junior Militia. Each member of the Militia is expected to provide his or her own weapon and ammunition for it, and other equipment. During this century, the implementation of the provisions of the U.S. Constitution which call for Militia training have been neglected, and our purpose will be to revive this tradition and fulfill the intent of the Constitution framers.
