REFRESHER COURSE: RULES OF THE ROAD

Jul 10, 2003

It?’s quite likely that you read the Arizona Driver License Manual some time ago (many years for some of us), and although you surely know what to do when you come upon a yellow light, you may not recall what you?’re required to do in situations you don?’t see every day.

For instance, do you remember the rule about meeting a stopped school bus (with alternating flashing lights and a mechanical arm extended), traveling in the opposite direction? You are not required to stop if you are on a divided roadway (one separated by physical barriers such as a fence, curbing or separation of the pavement). But roadway striping by itself does not constitute a physical separation of the roadway; hence, on Glendale Avenue, for example, you must stop when encountering a stopped school bus, regardless of the direction of your travel.

And your defensive driving refresher tip of the month---tire blowouts. The Arizona Motor Vehicle Division offers this piece of advice about how to handle a tire blowout:

1. Hold the steering wheel tightly and keep your vehicle going straight.
2. Ease off the gas pedal and do NOT apply the brakes.
3. Let the vehicle slow down until it is almost stopped.
4. Just before the vehicle stops, pull off the roadway and apply the brakes.

Happy motoring!. . . ☺
