Internet Homework Help Available at Three Phoenix Libraries

Jul 10, 2003

March 21, 2002

Three Phoenix library branches are offering free homework assistance via an Internet service that connects students to expert tutors in math, science, social studies and English.

Students between fourth and twelfth grades can use the new service from 3-7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at Central Library's Teen Central, 1221 N. Central Ave.; Desert Sage Branch Library, 7602 E. Encanto Blvd.; and Harmon Branch Library, 411 W. Yavapai St.

To use "Live Homework Help," kids log on to designated computer terminals, enter the subject they need help in as well as their grade level. They will be connected immediately to an actual tutor in an "online classroom" for up to 20 minutes of help.

Students and tutors can review specific homework questions using such features as controlled chat, an interactive white board and shared Web browsing. The tutors are certified teachers, college professors, professional tutors and graduate-school students from across the country.

The Phoenix Library Department subscribes to Tutor.com to offer the service. The New York-based company's clients also include public library systems in Boston, San Francisco and Louisville.
