Presidents Report

Dear Neighbors,

Six years ago I was asked to take over as president of my neighborhood association and held that post for three years. As I look back on that time I feel good about what was accomplished. In the three years we got three major grants to beautify Sheffield Lake, I call it the jewel of Disston. The first grant was for Neighborhood Identity Signs and they were placed around the lake, which is located in the middle of 49th St. and 23rd Ave. The second grant was for a water fountain in the lake and the third was for landscaping all around the lake. I still go there some evenings to enjoy the park like atmosphere in the middle of a road. Three years ago I was asked to become the President of CONA. This experience has been great, mostly because I have had the privilege to work with great people like all of you. In these three short years we have made a difference. We took on the Federal Government and kept them from placing Curbside mailboxes in St. Petersburg (who said you can?’t win against the Feds). We have a new website and email chat site, also most important of all we have been able to shape city policy in favor of the neighborhoods. You all have made the difference and your neighbors should be very grateful for the job you have done. Most of them don't know how much time you give up because of your dedication but I do. I salute you all as the greatest neighborhood people in the state of Florida. Due to some health problems and health problems of a family member, this was my last year as your President. As always if you need help you know where I am and I will try to help in anyway I can. Your new officers will continue to move this organization forward. About 60% of the neighborhoods association in St. Petersburg are members of CONA, but that number needs to increase, because we need to grow. I have quoted Teddy Roosevelt in the past and I still believe that today, CONA walks softly but carries a large stick. I also would like to quote a former President of FICO. ?“CONA gets things done.?”

At the December Board meeting we will allow each of you tell what your neighborhood association has accomplished this year. I know some of the things your neighborhoods have accomplished, but I would like to hear more and you all need to be able to brag a little. Also please bring some can goods to the meeting for the Holiday Food Drive, which benefits the St. Petersburg Free Clinic.

Your Neighbor, Jim Biggerstaff
