Presidents Report

Dear Neighbors,

The election of CONA?’s 2001 Executive Offices will take place at the December, CONA Board Meeting. All eligible members will be able to vote. After the election, everyone is encouraged to share what their neighborhood has accomplished during the past year, also Holiday refreshments will be served. It has been a good year for most neighborhoods so come out and celebrate with us.

In January, we should have a list of candidates for Mayor and City Council. It is very important we take time to pick the candidates who best represent our neighborhoods. I would like everyone to encourage your neighbors to get out to one of the candidate forums, which will be held. We have a lot of good people running office. May we all elect the best possible candidates!

I have appointed Ingrid Comberg head of the new COURT WATCH COMMITTEE. This group of concerned neighbors attend court proceedings. They watch over what the judges are doing when Prostitutes and Drug Dealers come before them. We want the Judges to know we want our laws enforced when it comes to prostitution and drug dealing.

The other day, the President of a small neighborhood association ask me this question, "WHY SHOULD MY NEIGHBORHOOD JOIN C.O.N.A?" The following list was my answer, which I would like to share with you.

 At some time in the future you might need the support of CONA to help you with an important issue.

 We are the largest umbrella organization of neighborhoods in the city.

 We sponsor the "CONA LEADESHIP CLASS"

 We hold monthly meetings and are open to the public.

 Anytime a vote on an issue is taken each neighborhood gets one vote no matter their size.

 We have a monthly newspaper that is mailed out to neighborhood members.

 We maintain a Website which neighborhood association meetings and activities are posted.

 We were instrumental in getting websites for all neighborhood associations in St. Petersburg.

 CONA started the COMPUTERS FOR THE COMMUNITY program.

 CONA is known as the voice of the neighborhoods at City Council meetings and City Hall. We get things done. As Teddy Roosevelt said "we walk softly but we carry a big stick"

 I could go on and on but if you want to join an organization that is fair to all neighborhoods and their neighbor's. Then I suggest joining CONA and become a partner with us.

Happy Holidays to all your families!

Your Neighbor, Jim Biggerstaff
