Did you know? Breast Cancer Facts

This info not intended as a replacement for medical care. For complete diagnosis and treatment, see your doctor.

1 in 8 women will get breast cancer?
A woman dies of breast cancer ever 11 minutes?
80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors?

5-10% have a family history of breast cancer?
10% have some risk factor?
Breast cancer is the most common cancer of all women?
It is the leading cause of death for women 35-54?

~ * You Are At Risk If * ~

Female
50+ years of age
Age at first childbirth (30+)

Never having given birth
Family history of breast cancer
Family history of cancer

Younger than 12 when menstruation began
Smoker
Obese

~ * Breast Self Examination * ~

Please do a breast exam monthly.
Before you take a shower or bath lock the door and get to know your breasts.
It may feel embarrassing or seem weird but the earlier you find a lump the better your chances are at survival.

Women over the age of 20 should examine their breasts once a month.

If you still have menstrual periods, the best time is seven to ten days after the start of the period, when the breast tenderness and swelling is over.

With your arms at your side look into the mirror and get to know your breasts. Turn from side to side to get a look at different angles.

Lift your hand above your head and turn from side to side.
Then life the other hand and do the same thing. You may feel uncomfortable but just check the lock on the bathroom door
and continue on. Check to see if there are any changes in your breasts.

Very gently squeeze your nipples to check for a discharge

Examine your skin for differences in skin tone, puckering, dimples, bulges, moles that have enlarged or darkened,
any lumps or sores.

Next take a deep breath. You are doing a good job. This may take ten minutes but it may also save your life.

Lay down now with a pillow under your shoulders and head and your hand by your side. Examine your breast by working your hand around the outer parts of your breast in a clock wise direction.

Then raise your arm above your head and examine the inner parts of your breast. Stretch the tissue around the inner parts.
Make sure you feel the armpit and the top of the collarbone.

Now that was easy, wasn't it?

The last thing you have to do is...
Promise you'll do it every month

If you notice something irregular go visit your doctor at once.
If you are not happy with a doctors diagnosis then get a second opinion.

This is your life! Do it for yourself!

Rare Form of Breast Cancer - Paget's Disease

In October of 2000 I received an email which portrayed a woman with a new form of breast cancer called Paget's Disease. This prompted me to look into this further since I had never heard of this disease or form of breast cancer before but I was very suspicious since the story described in the email seemed believable but it had the normal red flags of a typical chain letter.

I contacted the American Cancer Society directly and was told that the story in the email was unsubstantiated.

"Paget's disease of the nipple is a type of breast cancer that starts in the breast ducts and spreads to the skin of the nipple and then to the areola, the dark circle around the nipple. It is a rare type of breast cancer, occurring in only 1% of all cases. The skin of the nipple and areola often appears crusted, scaly, and red, with areas of bleeding or oozing. The woman may notice burning or itching. Paget's disease may be associated with in situ carcinoma, or with infiltrating breast carcinoma. If no lump can be felt in the breast tissue, and the biopsy shows that there are cancer cells inside the ducts but they have not spread through the walls of the ducts into the fatty tissue of the breast, the prognosis is excellent."

Symptoms & Information:
Scaling, oozing and patches on the skin of the nipple and areola of the breast
This disorder occurs in both men and women.

It may or may not spread to the genital and rectal areas. When detected early and involving only the nipple area of the breast, the cure rate for Paget's Disease of the Breast is very high.
One of the most effective tools in diagnosing breast cancers is mammography. However, in many cases of Paget's Disease of the Breast no mass is present and a mammogram may not indicate presence of a malignancy.
In this situation the nipple wedge biopsy may show Paget's Disease of the Nipple as well as intraduct carcinoma of the breast.
