The Dying Person's Bill of Rights

The cosmic religious experience is the strongest and the noblest driving force behind scientific research.
— Albert Einstein

The Dying Person's Bill of Rights

I have the right to be treated as a living human being until I die.

I have the right to maintain a sense of hopefulness, however changing its focus may be.

I have the right to be cared for by those who can maintain a sense of hopefulness, however changing this might be.

I have the right to express my feelings and emotions about my approaching death in my own way.

I have the right to participate in decisions concerning my care.

I have the right to expect continuing medical and nursing attention even though 'cure' goals must be changed to 'comfort' goals.

I have the right not to die alone.

I have the right to be free from pain.

I have the right to have my questions answered honestly.

I have the right not to be deceived.

I have the right to have help from and for my family in accepting my death.

I have the right to die in peace and dignity.

I have the right to retain my individuality and not be judged for my decisions which may be contrary to beliefs of others.

I have the right to discuss and enlarge my religious and/or spiritual experiences, whatever these may mean to others.

I have the right to expect that the sanctity of the human body will be respected after death.

I have the right to be cared for by caring, sensitive, knowledgeable people who will attempt to understand my needs and will be able to gain some satisfaction in helping me face my death.

Relating to a Dying Person and Their Family

I perceive that while everything around me is ever-changing,
ever-dying, there is underlying all that change a Living Power that
is changeless, that holds all together, that creates, dissolves, and recreates.
— M.K. Gandhi

Relating to a Dying Person and Their Family

From Dealing Creatively With Death: A Manual of Death Education and Simple Burial by Ernest Morgan

I perceive that while everything around me is ever-changing, ever-dying, there is underlying all that change a Living Power that is changeless, that holds all together, that creates, dissolves, and recreates.

— M.K. Gandhi
Five important things to bear in mind, in relating to a dying person and their family are:

1. Acceptance

A person for whom you care is part of your life; when such a person dies, a part of you dies also. Only by emotionally confronting your own death can you relate to another's death without being anxious about it. This is an aspect of maturity which can be developed through reading, discussion, and life experience.

2. Be Honest, Not Evasive

The second thing to bear in mind is honesty and straightforwardness. Evasion or ambiguity in response to a dying person's questions only increases his/her anxiety. If there is a chance for recovery this should be mentioned. Even a slight margin of hope can be a real comfort, but this should not be overemphasized.

3. Setting Their Own Pace

Dying persons should be allowed to accept the reality of their situation at their own pace. Information should neither be withheld from them nor forced upon them. Ordinarily they will ask for it. Different people approach death in different ways, depending on their experience, their cultural background, and the degree of maturity they have reached in their feelings and in their understanding with regard to life and death. The emotional phenomena commonly experienced by dying people (listed by Dr. Kubler-Ross as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) do not necessarily occur in a prescribed sequence. People seem to choose their own style and pace with which to die, and it often reflects the style and pace with which they lived.

4. Be Available

The willingness to be available, to commit time, energy, and caring, to the dying person and his/her family, even at irregular hours, can mean a great deal. Many people worry about what to say. The best advice is just to be yourself. If you cannot speak of death you can still be supportive. Don't avoid eye contact or physical touch. It's okay to let the dying person know your limitations. That will take the "guesswork" out of your relationship.

5. Remember the Family

Relating well to the family of a dying person is important also, for they, too, are partly dying. Family members need fellowship and emotional support, both before and after death occurs. This can take the form of small things, a brief visit, a meal, a little gift. Much of human wisdom and understanding come from within. An understanding friend needs just to listen. Advice can be useful, but should be given sparingly and mainly when asked for. Moral support is especially welcome from those who can identify with the family from having had a similar experience.

Selected Poems for the Bereaved

Selected Poems for the Bereaved

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

When tomorrow starts without me,
and I'm not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes,
all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry,
the way you did today,
while thinking of the many things,
we didn't get to say.

I know how much you love me,
as much as I love you,
and each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too;
But when tomorrow starts without me,
please try to understand,
that an Angel came and called my name,
and took me by the hand,
and said my place was ready,
in heaven far above,
and that I'd have to leave behind,
all those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away,
a tear fell from my eye,
for all life, I'd always thought,
I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for,
so much yet to do,
it seemed almost impossible,
that I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays,
the good ones and the bad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
and all the fun we had.

If I could relive yesterday,
just even for awhile,
I'd say goodbye and kiss you
and maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realized,
that this could never be,
for emptiness and memories,
would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things,
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did,
my heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through heaven's gates,
I felt so much at home.
When God looked down and smiled at me,
from His great golden throne,

He said, "This is eternity,
and all I've promised you".
Today for life on earth is past,
but here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow,
but today will always last,
and since each day's the same day,
there's no longing for the past.

But you have been so faithful,
so trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things,
you knew you shouldn't do.
But you have been forgiven
and now at last you're free.
So won't you take my hand
and share my life with me?

So when tomorrow starts without me,
don't think we're far apart,
for every time you think of me,
I'm right here, in your heart.

David M. Romano

Good-bye Mama

You were so many things to me.
You gave me life and helped me see.
You taught me all I needed to know.
You held my hand and helped me grow.

You washed my face and dried my tears
And rocked away my childhood fears.
I told you all my little-girl dreams,
Of crystal houses and golden rings.

You were always there to help me along,
And you tried to teach me right from wrong.
But the childhood years slipped away too fast.
I wish I could have made them last.

There are so many things I wanted to say,
To express my love every day.
But somehow, it seems, the words got lost,
And up till now, I didn't know the cost.

I guess you had to say good-bye-
The only time you ever made me cry.
Oh mama I miss you, wherever you are.
Maybe you're watching me from your shining star.

Goodbye Mama

LETTER FROM HEAVEN

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness;
Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you.

It's good to have you back again,
you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.
I need you here badly, you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low;
Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street
and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go....from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard him call;
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things, I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seems all to brief;
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.

Come With Me

The Lord saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be,
So He put his arms aroud you
And whispered, "Come with me."

With tearful eyes, we watched you suffer
And saw you fade away,
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating,
A beautiful smile at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove
He only takes the best.

It's lonesome here without you
We miss you so each day,
Our lives aren't the same
Since you went away.

When days are sad and lonely,
And everything goes wrong,
We seem to hear you whisper,
"Cheer up and carry on."

Each time we see your picture,
You seem to smile and say,
"Don't cry, I'm in God's keeping,
We'll meet again someday."

I Did Not Die

Do not stand on my grave and weep
I am not there.... I do not sleep

I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints in the snow

I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am a gentle autumns rain

When you awaken in the morning hush
I will be that swift uplifting rush

I am the birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night

So do not stand on my grave and cry
I am not there......."I DID NOT DIE"

Don't Cry Anymore

Don't cry any more tears for me,
I am at peace and finally free.
Like the eagles in the sky,
I am soaring, so please don't cry.

I know you love me, I love you too.
But my time was over, was finally through.
I have ascended to a better place,
Which is not confined by time or space.

To those that loved me, I did not fall;
Instead, I succumbed to a higher call,
Do not mourn me, I am with you still,
I'll always be with you, from dawn----until.

"Death affects us all differently and we deal with it in our own respective ways. But when it happens in an untimely way or fashion it becomes much harder to bear. In fact, the only way to bring peace or closure to the incident is by viewing it in a totally different manner.

Don't Cry Anymore
http://www.debsspot.com/dont_cry.htm

A Million Times

A million times we've needed you,
A million times we've cried.
If love alone could've saved you,
You never would have died.

In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place,
No one else will ever fill.

It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you didn't go alone.
Part of us went with you,
The day God took you home

Weep Not of My Death

My Love, weep not of my death
tis but another passing
of Gods plan divine.
I shall pass this way again
through thundering winds of change
in your quiet moments of solitude
as your mind dances
with daydreams of yore
while walking upon a distant shore
feel and see my kindly spirit
through thundering winds of change
rising near the raging sea
dressed in a vail of romantic lace
my spirit breathing
through thundering winds of change
embracing against you
upon a desolate shore

In your dreams of nightly rest
my locks of golden hair
will fall against your naked chest
as I lay a tender kiss
upon your weary brow
I shall pass this way again
through thundering winds of change
and exit through your
rickety screen door
My Love weep not of my death
I will lovingly haunt you
for evermore
I shall pass this way again
through thundering winds of change

REMEMBER

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd;
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve;
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
