out of control traffic

Posted in: Andalucia
We have lived on this street for 30+ years and are extremely concerned about the traffic situation on 47th avenue. Are you aware that as high as 500 cars per hour are using this street and about 1/4 of them are exceeding the speed limits by at least 10 to 30 mph? This is a problem that goes on day after day. I am homebound in a wheelchair at the present time and have "nothing better" to do but sit and count cars and watch traffic; even when we have children walking to school. We need help before someone is seriously injured. We need to ask the city for speed bumps, or other traffic calming procedures. Check out the traffic calming procedures that have been installed betweenThomas and IndianSchool on 48th street to combat the same problem we have. Whatever we do we must do something before the new school is built or we could lose one of our most precious commodities---a child. -------- thanks

Jon, I understand your concern about the traffic on 47 ave. There is that same concern on Campbell, Glenrosa, and 49 Ave. I,m happy you are taking this problem head on. As our previous conversation, this will be no easy task. Can you tell me what they did on 48 street that worked. If I or the Neighorhood Association can help, please let me know.

Jerry; Thanks for a reply. I sent the petition for a traffic study in today, Jan.24,2000. While I realize this is just the first step at least it is a step foreward. At the same time I fully believe that problems under discussion involving speeding and traffic problems exist on Campbell, Glenrosa, and 49th avenue are the same, the time to be squeeky wheels to the city council and to the mayors office is right now in light of the traffic changes that were just implemented by the city on 19th avenue due to a death of a school child. The city is glaringly aware of this problem at this time and we need to stick together as a neighborhood. We need to make continued calls to 602-534-speed, to our councilmans; and the mayors office to accomplish tne desired effect. One squeeky wheel is ignorable but multi squeeky wheels can make a difference. I am going to go over to 48th st. to talk to the neighborhood people to find out how they have achieved their traffic calming procedures. Please refer to the packet you previously received from the city.
They have chicanes, and semi-diverters with rumble brick imbeded in the street as warnings, plus signs indicating traffic calming. Will update with city's
response as soon as it is received.
Thanks, Jon
