AT&T Safe Schools provides anytime, anywhere communication to schools -- making the learning environment safer for students and educators. AT&T Safe Schools puts wireless phones directly in the hands of school personnel who are responsible for the safety of children. Phones are provided to crossing guards, playground supervisors, school security guards, parking lot attendants, and parents or teachers traveling with children on field trips. These phones are available to adults to call 911 in an emergency, contact the main office for assistance, and for any other communication needs that will help keep students safe.

The Safe Schools program was launched at the beginning of the 1997-98 school year in Phoenix/Tucson and 20 other major metropolitan areas across the country. Each AT&T market received 100 phones.

Each school received two phones. The two phones were donated free to the schools for one year along with one year of free air time. Schools were required to apply for the program and describe how the phones will be used for safety purposes. By having each school complete an application it allows schools to find new and creative ways of using wireless communication to make students and teachers safer.
