Kenilworth School in downtown Phoenix opened in 1920 and is the oldest original school in Maricopa County. It counts among its graduates 1964 presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater, U.S. Senator Paul Fannin, and Arizona State Treasurer Tony West.

In the summer of 1997, Kenilworth was selected from a number of Arizona schools that applied to receive an AT&T Learning Network wireless communications system. Through the AT&T Learning Network, AT&T donated 26 wireless phones, two years of free airtime, and a Wireless Office Service (WOS) system to Kenilworth. The contribution amounts to approximately $45,000.

Wireless Office Service
The wireless communications system installed at the Kenilworth School includes an on-campus "macrocell" (a unique cell site that is sympathetic to the school's historic architecture by being camouflaged on the second floor of the school's water cooling tower) and WOS software programming in AT&T's mobile switching center in downtown Phoenix. WOS allows Kenilworth teachers to make calls using a simple four digit number anywhere on or off campus. Kenilworth is one of only 30 schools nationwide to receive a WOS system by the Year 2000.

Wireless Phone Usage
Studies show that an individual teacher can gain up to two weeks of teaching time a year using wireless communications. For example, using a wireless phone reduces the time it takes a teacher to confirm attendance, accommodate schedule changes, request textbooks, and conduct meetings with parents.

At Kenilworth, the main use of the phones is to facilitate communication between teachers, parents, and other staff members. Teachers can be easily reached in the classroom, hallways, library, bus loading zone, or on the playground, practice field, or field trip. If there is an emergency, a teacher can call for immediate assistance. To gain the greatest benefit from using wireless communications, teachers were instructed on proper phone use by AT&T employees.
