Snakes

Posted in: Madison Park
Need advice. I have found two snakes in my front yard in the last 2 days. Did some research online and I believe they are Eastern Kingsnakes. What should I do?
Kingsnake Info

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eastern kingsnakes are common in many areas of the Southeast. This species occurs in a wide variety of habitats. Although the species is considered terrestrial, it is often found in the vicinity of permanent or temporary aquatic areas. Adults often reach lengths of 3 to 4 feet. The color is black with light yellow or whitish crossbands, whereas the black kingsnake, found in northwestern Georgia, is shiny black with scattered flecks of yellow. The belly is a combination of lack and yellow. This kingsnake feeds on snakes (including venomous species), lizards, rodents, birds and eggs -- even eggs scavenged from turtle nests. Experiments with kingsnakes have demonstrated that they are immune to the venom of rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and copperheads.

Tips on reducing snakes

How can I avoid snakes?
You can reduce the likelihood of their presence near your residence by removing items they might use for shelter ?– or which their prey might use -- such as scrap sheet metal, boards, woodpiles and similar debris. Raising materials off the ground promotes dryer storage and attracts fewer critters. When woodlands and other plant communities are nearby, eliminating the possibility of a snake is virtually impossible. Learn to identify the dangerous species in your area, and be cautious when conducting activities that could promote encounters (e.g., don?’t walk around barefooted outdoors at night when the copperhead is on the prowl for food).

Thanks for the tips. I live on Wedgewood (the cul de sac end side of Wedgewood) and we have a creek in the back yard. Figured they were coming from there but I have found the snakes in my front yard...no debris on the ground...yard is well maintained. I don't know.
