Wachovia donates $1M to sports complex
The Wachovia Foundation has pledged $1 million to Queens University of Charlotte's planned sports complex at Marion Diehl Park.

Bank of America Foundation and BellSouth Corp. have also made commitments.

''It is important for the corporate community to join individual donors in supporting this project not only because it is good for Charlotte, but also because it provides a national model for successful public/private partnerships,'' says Ben Jenkins, head of Charlotte-based Wachovia Corp.'s (NYSE:WB) general bank and co-chair of the sports complex campaign.

Construction is slated to start within 30 days and will include a soccer/lacrosse stadium, a track and field complex and an artificial turf field. The second and third phases, which include a field house and facilities for baseball, tennis and softball, will need an additional $7 million in private support.
