ARMED ROBBERY ON MURRAYHILL
A couple attending our meeting gave a scary account of being robbed at gunpoint last Friday night (Oct. 6th) around 11:30pm. They were just pulling into their driveway when another car approached their home & slowed. The robber jumped out of his vehicle, approached our neighbor, pulled a gun & demanded his wallet. Afterwards, 911 was called, the robber?’s car was identified & one of the suspects was caught. Another got away. They had robbed 7 people in a series of 7 similar robberies that night.

ALWAYS LOOK AROUND WHEN EXITING YOU CAR! This is not something we usually think about but we should. If you think you?’re being followed, don?’t drive home. Drive to a public place.

MAKE PHOTOCOPIES OF EVERYTHING IN YOUR WALLET

HALLOWEEN IS COMING
Make your children go trick or treating in a group. Go to homes you know & examine the candy before letting them eat it.

PRESENTATION by Vicky Toomey, 911 Representative

911 employs approximately 100 people. They get roughly 68,000 calls per month & around 7,000 calls per day. If you call 911 and it rings several times, DON?’T HANG UP because this ties up the line.

Calls are dispatched by priority. A Breaking & Entering call where the victim is inside the home is a high priority with a faster response time than most other crimes. Don?’t touch the point of entry in case police are able to obtain good finger prints. Make a list of anything damaged or stolen. 911 should tell you a time frame to expect an officer to arrive in when you call in now.

Numbers to dial:
211 for United Way (Human Services)
311 for non-Emergency calls ?– Solid Waste, Animal Control, Storm Water, etc.
411 Information for phone numbers
511 Highway & Interstate Conditions ?– construction & wrecks
611 Telephone provider for phones disconnected ?– rings you directly to cell provider
711 Telecommunications relay services
911 Emergency Services
*47 (*HP) Highway Patrol from cellphone only ?– You need a phase II cell phone for the Highway Patrol to track you using GPS tracking. Any other cell phone shows up as being within a 100 mile radius of the cell tower. This range is too broad so you have to know where you are to give directions.

STREETLIGHT PROPOSAL ?– MATT MAGNASCO
Matt is working on trying to get street lights installed on Murrayhill and White Oak. The police are in favor of having the lights added. We have had vehicle break-ins up and down these streets. We also just this past weekend had another armed robbery of one of our members on Murrayhill Road. The lights will make it safer for everyone including pedestrians, since there are no sidewalks in the area!

What must happen is 25% of the residents must sign the initial request petition. Duke Energy will then do a lighting plan. That plan will go back to the residents along White Oak and Murrayhill. In order to have this implemented it will require 60% of the residents to sign off on the detailed plan.

Matt collected signatures at our meeting for the 25% portion of the petition.

One of our neighbors objected to having the Association back this initiative but feels that signatures are needed from at least one property owner in each block of each street that is to be included in the lighting plan proposal.

Marty has put this issue on our neighborhood discussion page for anyone who would like to express their opinion on this.

QUEENS UNIVERSITY SPORTS COMPLEX
Update from Mallory Benz, Asst. Dir. For Media & PR to Lamar Gunter:
?“We plan to complete the lighting on the Competition Field at the end of Sept. The scoreboard should be installed in October. The contractor is installing the parking lot lights and should have that complete in early November. We have hired an engineer to design a parking lot near the Competition Field and plan to get that under construction after the first of the year.

We also held our 3rd Quarterly Meeting with Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation dept on 9/11/06 and are continuing to strengthen that partnership.?”

USO VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THE AIRPORT
Lamar Gunter said they still need volunteers. Please consider helping if possible.
CDOT 3 and 4 way stops have been approved by the transportation committee for roads with over 600 vhp in 24 hours. This is going to City Council for approval on 10/23/06. If it passes CDOT will address our past concerns and Marty feels it has a good chance of passing.

Adopt a stream request 5817 Wedgewood, Elizabeth Keever , said she would like for residents along the stream to adopt a section especially where you might see pipes crossing to watch for debris clogging the stream. She feels that some of the heavy flooding at her home was attributed to the stream being dammed up with wood and a large piece of plastic pipe. Marty told her he would throw this suggestion out. If you?’re interested and live along the stream let us know. It?’s a 2-yr. commitment to adopt a stream.

Home on Seneca Place finally replaced the worn out garage door. Home looks 100% better.

5201 ReMax Realtor at the encouragement of our President Marty removed the depilated old pool decking from the Yard.

Sue Valentine-Plyler?’s mother passed away on October 3rd, 2006. Sue is our Madison Park Realtor sponsor of our web site, and long term resident of Madison Park.

Jason Hilliard an approved homebuyer for HomePickle in Charlotte insured President Marty that illegal sign placement in our community of their signs will be stopped immediately. Marty contacted Homepickle through their web site after having to remove signs that were placed up on our Adopt A Streets. This direct approach has been helping curb some of this problem when a web site or actual phone number other then cell phone can be located.

ELECTIONS NEXT MONTH for our 2007 Board and Officers. Please submit names, or your name if you would like to run for office in 2007. If you?’re submitting someone else?’s name make sure that person agrees to run as a candidate. Remember if you would like to run you are expected to attend the monthly meetings and be available to attend any special training or events we have in the community, and assist with events!

Open positions: Director and Secretary
Secretary ?– needs to attend meetings, take minutes (Marty provides a lot of this information in his typed & e-mailed agenda), then type minutes for distribution to members. Debra Campbell handles the distribution. Secretary is a very important position and one that we cannot operate without!

Director ?– attend meetings, help with events, votes on issues affecting neighborhood, and helps make general decisions regarding direction the Homeowner?’s association is taking. Most of the voting and discussions simply as a means of convenience and to save time of our elected directors is done currently through e-mails. Director terms are 2 year terms! Directors are limited to two terms without a year break. Officers however President , Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer can serve unlimited terms as long as they are re-elected each year and desire to continue to serve the community!

E-MAIL NOMINATIONS TO CHERYL FURR at bfurr@carolina.rr.com

Satellite Dishes have been relocated at two of the homes on Seneca Place from their front yards. There are 25 dishes along Tyvola Road, Kentland, and Flagstaff that Mark Griffin the zoning inspector is getting ready to enforce since only a few were moved after the violation was pointed out to residents, property management, and the property owners. Hopefully this will be corrected soon.

2110 TYVOLA Road has not given the Zoning Dept. the necessary survey. They can not get a certificate of occupancy without it. There are no cars being stored on site presently. Also, this albeit a peculiarly designed one is just a single family home not really a garage apartment as many in the neighborhood call it. Zoning still says that whether it is rented or lived in by an owner is not germane. If the occupant is storing someone else?’s cars, that would be the problem in the future. Some of the neighbors mentioned they were ready for the place to be finished up and some landscaping completed on site.

DECEMBER CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY SOCIAL
We will need a few volunteers to help with that event. If you would like to help with this event contact us or let us know at the November Meeting.

WELCOME to our new attendees and recognition of new members
Next Meeting 11/13/06

Our meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,
Cheryl Furr
