Arizona residents who use TV antennas to receive their signal, by
"rooftop" or "rabbit ears", will soon need a digital converter box to
watch their local programs. But what about the old TV sets? Before
hauling your old set to the attic, the dump, or the curb, Tucson Clean
and Beautiful wants you to know about a recycling and reuse program
which will benefit both the environment and our neighbors in Mexico.

On June 27, 2009, Tucson Clean & Beautiful will host an Electronics
Recycling Event to collect computers, TVs, or anything else with a power
cord from residents across the Tucson-Pima County metro area. Recycling
of TVs will cost $10 each, but recycling of other electronic items such
as computers, phones, VCRs, and other items will be free of charge.

TCB is partnering with Retroworks de Mexico, a recycling company set up
by American Retroworks Inc. of Middlebury, Vermont. Also, the Women’s
Foundation of Southern Arizona will also be collecting cell phones for
reuse for the Emerge Center.

While unemployment for women over the age of 40 in Mexico is considered
"terminal", a group of women formed a co-op to find work which was
environmentally friendly and sustainable. Their commitment and their
know how to reuse and repair was their natural strength to be trained in
electronic recycling and take it to their community, Fronteras, Mexico
through the support and collaboration of American Retroworks.

In Mexico, they are known as "Las Chicas Bravas" - or "The Tough Gals".
They braved Vermont winters to train to disassemble, grade, and repair
used electronics. Now, they have brought those skills home to Mexico
and added new skills to the mix - TV repair and metallurgy. Recycling
your electronics will create jobs in Mexico, support women's rights and
equality and provide an employment opportunity for reusing and repairing
electronic equipment.
