Safety Fencing Smack Down

It's wintertime and that's when the number of traffic accidents on Queens Blvd spike. We hope that Mother Nature spares us from the snow, sleet, and freezing rain and that casualties are kept to a bare minimum this year. Last winter there were dozens of traffic accidents along QB in Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Rego Park, and Elmhurst; thankfully no one was killed.
Unfortunately there were nearly 3 dozen incidents that resulted in damage to numerous pedestrian, wrought iron safety fences that line the entire 7.5 miles of QB.
Mangled metal lined many of the medians for weeks.
It turned out that 311 and DOT could not figure out how to input this problem into their complaint system. Many calls to our very helpful and diligent Community Board 6 helped to push through a majority of those repairs. Atlas Iron Works of Whitestone is the contractor hired by NYC to do these repairs.
They did a great job.
We hope the process goes smoother this year.
Several sections of fencing have already been knocked down in FH and RP and have been reported to 311.
If you spot a fence laying on its side, please call 311 and tell them that a "metal pedestrian fence on the median on QB needs to be repaired"; give them the exact location, and that should do it. Otherwise contact CB6.
Thanks.
