Pedestrian Safety Fencing Repairs

After more than one year of calls and letters sent to City Hall and DOT, dozens of damaged fencing along the Queens Blvd medians are finally being repaired. All along QB lay mangled iron railings that were knocked down by vehicles that jumped the medians. These fences were installed a decade ago to prevent jaywalking and help save lives. The fences line the entire 7.5 miles of QB and cost $15 million to install.
The city contracts out these fence
repairs but unfortunately two contractors walked away in early 2008.It took nearly one year to sign-on a new contractor. Work finally commenced the week of January 12th 2009 near 75th Av.
Hopefully the work on nearly 50 damaged sites will be completed by the current contractor.
If you spot a damaged fence along QB, call 311 or COmmunity Board 6.
