The Collaboration & Project:
The Latino Poster Series is a project created by a partnership among Gemini Ink, the YMCA program at Nimitz Academy and the Hill Country and Neighborhood Link. Each partner brings specific resources that contribute to the success of the project. Gemini Ink, a literary arts center, provides a writer/webdesigner-in-residence who works directly with the youth in the development of the website. The YMCA program at Nimitz Academy provides the students and the computer stations used to produced the website. Finally, the Hill Country and Neighborhood Link hosts the website for the Latino Poster Series as an in-kind contribution to the project. All partners jointly work on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the project.

The Latino Author Series was a 12-week project in which students from Nimitz Middle School participated in the research and interview process of selected Latino authors. Students volunteered their time in an after school program that is lead by the YMCA Young Volunteers Club. An instructor and an internet specialist assisted in their process of research and the creation of this website. The process of this project focused on providing a wide audience information on Latino authors that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. The site was created by young adults for people of all ages. Along with the web site, students also participated in the design of related posters that will be distributed to schools in the San Antonio area.

What I did on this project:

I looked up Gary Soto who is a very famous Latino author on the internet. I came up with the questions to ask the authors and after that we e-mailed the questions to the authors. I also helped to design the website and learned website designing. I worked with a wonderful group of people who became a team and are fun to work with. Although it was hard, we managed just fine and completed the project. –Genevieve

I learned a lot about Latino authors. I also got to make interview questions for authors. I found new web sites and learned about creating a website, logo, and posters. -Lyzette

I did research on Latino authors, and with the information I came up with interview questions, which we e-mailed. I learned how to interview people, work on the Internet, even learned about new websites and search engines, and how to design a poster with just a few of us. It is very cool I like it a-lot. Randall

What I learned in this project is how to interview people. I also learned how to do research using the internet through search engines and web sites. I also learned a lot of interesting things about Angela De Hoyos and how she worked as a laborer in the fields. -Robyn

I was the instructor on the project. But by working on this project I learned how young adults think and how they perceive reading and writing. But most importantly it taught me how fascinated people are with the internet and how it’s a great resource for learning. -Teresa
